As clever satire, any cover that features a green decomposing Hitler, spiked colander torture, masked ear worm, skull & bones chair, pet turkey-vulture and legion of nazi ghoul & zombie stormtroopers in a dungeon has to be da bomb! Definitely one of Alex's greatest well orchestrated masterpieces. He produced a bunch of first class covers during WWII, each stands on it's own as a great work by the master, but if I had to pick one iconic cover, this stands out for me as the most jaw dropping Schomburg war era cover.  

My focus on this particular issue of Marvel Mystery doesn't take anything away from other magnificent pre and post war Schomburg covers; most are fabulous and stand-out in their own rite, many being classics. The bottom line is that when Alex had sufficient time and interest to engage his most creative impulses he put more into his work than almost any artist one can think of in the era.

It's worth noting that I'm still finding clever details overlooked on this cover! For instance, here's one that almost escaped notice: German grenades were called "potato mashers" because they had a wood handle connected to an unadorned cylindrical canister on top. Conversely, hand grenades issued to U.S. soldiers were nicknamed "pineapples" because of their distinctive oval shape defined by raised fragmentation squares on a heavily grooved surface.  On the cover of MM#46 Schomburg put what appears to be "pineapple skin" (similar to actual fruit) on the canister part German potato masher being thrown by the zombie stormtrooper. There's always an inclination to read more into Schomburg's work because he frequently puts a lot into his covers besides the central theme. Clearly Alex slipped whimsical elements into his compositions whenever the opportunity presented itself.

I have been a comic lover since I was a kid.  I’ve rarely been in the presence of a Timely Book. I’m SA and Bronze through and through. Golden books were just too expensive for me to even do more than stare at.  Imagine when I found this out in the wild.  When I say wild, I don’t mean a book store.  
If anything, let it inspire you to never stop looking

These were the four golden age books I found in my dad's collection. Three Timely comics ain't bad. Don't mind the EC in the top right corner, this is the only pic on my phone of em!!

That is outstanding!!!! Wow, a Human Torch #13 and a Marvel Mystery #48 as highlights of the stack (for ME anyway!)!!! Congratulations!!!  :applause:

I've been holding back for a while sending some books in for reholdering – I wasn't sure if they would come out ok, but this post has emboldened me.

And totally agree - the current slabs are WAAAAAY better than the older ones. I love the little lip they have on the back for carrying them, and they don't have that stupid strip of paper glued to the top.

The clarity of the newest gen is SO much better than anything I'd even thought possible, due to the layers of material between you and the book! Superior indeed!

The only draw back are those darn newton rings . Sometimes they are there and just ruin the visual appeal other they are not .
