"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.

The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is

wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts

they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,

it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...

And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not

warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of

resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as

to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost

in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from

time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

It is its natural manure."

I always thought this was attributed to Jefferson commenting on the French Revolution but it is in fact what he wrote when told of Shay's Rebellion. Interesting enough, this rebeliion pointed out and finally made it clear that a real constitutional country, a nation needed to be formed.

Washington wrote, "What stronger evidence can be given of the want of energy in our government than these disorders?"

It was Shay's Rebellion that showed just how weak the Articles of Confederation had left the Federal Government. Mind you, the states did this on purpose but it became apparent that 13 individual entities could not move forward unless united.

September 2, 1945

VJ Day!!

It has a few different dates assigned to it but nothing like the day the mighty MO sitting in Tokyo Bay and the real signed "instrument of surrender." On board were MacArthur, Nimitz and the Japenese foreign minister, Mamoru Shigemitsu (who would later be found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to seven years.

On August 14, 1945, it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. Since then, both August 14 and August 15 have been known as "Victory over Japan Day," or simply "V-J Day." The term has also been used for September 2, 1945, when Japan's formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. Coming several months after the surrender of Nazi Germany, Japan's capitulation in the Pacific brought six years of hostilities to a final and highly anticipated close.

Okay, 2nd only to Neal Adams is Charles Schulz and his beloved creations the Peanuts gang or the Lil' Folks when they first came out.

I got this in the other day, after having seen and missed buying one in a sales thread on the boards. It is the first paperback compilation put out in the early 1950's (1953?). The cute little 4 panel cartoons are amazing. But the very interesting thing is the way they look. We are all used to seeing them more grown up, more developed. But this is how it started.

I hope to someday own an OA of Schulz, he is an American icon for this gang of children. I would hang it next to my OA Adams and my OA Watterson. None of which I own at this moment.

The really great thing is that my kids took it from me to read. They love the little Snoopy just like me. That is very cool.

Interesting. IF that is the first time, it gives an entirely new motivation for Lucy. She didn't want to get hurt (a very normal little girl reaction) as opposed to just wanting to inflict damage.

I understand why Schultz made Lucy the way he did as the years went by, it gave Chuck a foil. But I like early, more traditionally Christian culture Peanuts.

That is a fantastic observation and is so much better in both interpretation and origin of the eventual Lucy vs. Chuck storyline. It has a much better feel to it and a more honest reason. I'll have to look for the second and thrid time to see how and when it develops to what it is today.

Awesome collection of Adams covers. Is that all of them? In high grade? Cool!

There are about 10 more raw books I did not post; Bob Hopes and Jerry Lewis and some other one offs. As well as about 30 or 40 Continuity / PC covers he did. They will all be getting slabbed eventually.

:hi:

I don't expect you to remember me, but we've spoken in the past. I'm a friend of Tupenni's, when I'm not chastising him publicly in his own thread.

I enjoy reading your posts.

The Lucy/Chuck dynamic has always interested me. The stereotypically nagging wife married to a spineless husband trope.

I also like the "Lucy couldn't catch a baseball in right field" strips, although my favorite one is where she DOES catch a ball, and to Chuck's amazement, quotes Psalms something or another.

Were you at the dinner in Charlotte 2010?

I noticed you in the "TuPenny had the nerve to sell something he bought" thread and your Mississippi piece was great. Sorry Buffy attempted to take an angry post to it, but most of us loved it. Passion is a great thing and sometimes an even better writer. When I saw your post in my little journal here, I made the connection to Rocker quickly. I am glad you like it.

As for Lucy and Charlie B, they are quite the couple. I'll really have to examine the relationship they have and how it evolved ober the years. It is funny now, in middle age, that I finally have a dog. I never had a pet growing up and when my wife said, "let's get a dog." I was worried. But it turns out, I love him and I think of Charlie B and Snoopy often. I am the alpha dog as far as he is concerned; when I am not in the house is a different dog than when I am home. It is funny the stories my wife tells because he would never do those things when I am home.
