2 year old reads comic & smokes in 1959

i guess it takes something really unusual to shock someone today since almost everything has been done before. there is a comic book reference here.

i think many of you have seen or heard the great commotion about the 2 year old indonesian baby who

was smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day. recently there was news that he's kicked the habit.

 

it appears that smoking babies is not an unusual event after i found these life magazine pictures from february 1959 of a 2 year old smoking. initially i thought the pictures were digitally altered but i don't think so. the pictures could be posed but i'll let you decide. i would find the pictures disturbing if they are real.

Well, at least he was safe reading a Dell Mickey Mouse!!! It could have been worse. He could have been reading an EC and there would have been another round of Senate hearings with Dr. Wertham condemning all comics!!

What careless parents. How do you expect a two year old to not ash on the couch or get cigarette burns in the upholstery? A responsible parent would have their kid smoking from a pipe with one of those little sippy cup lids over the bowl :makepoint:

Unbelievable, but then again, we are talking about LIFE magazine. In 50 years, we'll likely be looking back at pictures with 2 year old's talking on cellphones in the same way.

 

yeah that is whole trick...

 

back then believe it or not there were cigarette ads in magazines

where doctors were advising people to light up because of the great

health benefit from smoking.
