So who says their fellow collectors aren't nice people

34 posts in this topic

So for those out there who have given up on your fellow collectors being incapable of selfless acts of kindness, I would like to tell you all a story.

I guess the quick version of this story would be; I managed to get some signature series books done by Joe Simon and Carmine Infantino.

However, I would be doing an injustice by not telling the whole story of how this came to be:

It started about 2 weeks ago when I first noticed that Joe Simon (the co-creator of Captain America) was going to be at a convention in New York this past weekend. Seeing as how he is a legend in the industry and at 90, probably won't be doing too many more shows, I thought this might be my only opportunity to get some books signed.

So I contacted New York resident, and all around great guy, Dam60 (Dave Matteini) and asked if he was going to the show, and wondered if he would do me a favor. He immediately said he would love to get autographs for me.

Then I contacted Paul Litch to see if he would be able to run around with Dave witnessing the signatures, so I could get them done for the signature series. He said no problem, and would arrange something with that and with payment, etc.

The next step was to contact the resident DC bronze specialist (Greggy) to see if he had any books that I was looking for, for signatures. I sent him a list, and he was able to get back to me, with a good number of them, including the ever elusive Greggy mid-range Bronze Marvel books. He quoted me some prices for each and gave me a discount on the ones that I bought (without even asking). He then sent them directly to Dave to save time.

After that, I contacted Peter Dixon at Paradise Comics to see if he wanted to send any books down (because he usually gets books done for me and I wanted to return the favor) to get autographed by Mr. Simon. He said to give him a couple of days to get some books together before I sent my others down to Dave. So I called him back on Monday and he said he had talked to a couple of guys who were going down to the show in NY who would drop off the books with CGC. Peter then said he would put it on to his account, so I didn't have to worry about the payment side of things.

During this whole time, I kept offering to give Dave some money for admission, or in case he needed extra to cover autograph fees. He refused every time.

The final result? Not only did I get my books signed by Joe Simon, but Dave also took the time to get a couple of books done by Carmine Infantino for me as well.

Without the people on these boards, something like this could not have been accomplished. I would like to thank Paul for his unquestionable professionalism, Greggy for the very nice deal he made with me, Peter for taking care of payment and arranging getting the books down there, thanks to 2 people who I don't even know who took the books down to the show, and a special thanks to Dave for being such a great guy, and friend.

KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU!!! 893applaud-thumb.gif

Great story Alex.....well done to all and as somebody who has received more than one favour from David a special thumbsup2.gif to you.

Alex....save me one of the Infantino's (I assume from his attendance that his health has picked up).

I love hearing these stories. I've also had experiences with several people on this forum that went above and beyond "the call of duty" in helping me out, and I've never met any of them in person either. And you're right, Dave is definitely one of the good guys.

I stood in line with Dave (and the con was a pleasure to experience walking around with him - his upbeat attitude and enthusiasm are infectious, and we only spent 45 minutes at lunch talking about pressing!) and got a book signed by Infantino. And let me tell you, Dave attacked his mission of getting those books signed with a very high degree of focus. It was like watching Nick Fury getting dropped behind enemy lines in order to run a night raid with the Howlers. He was in his element and enjoying every minute of it! DAMN, DAM!

Carmine was very gracious, and very happy to discuss comics with us. I mentioned that as a kid I was a 100% Marvel fanatic but as I have gotten older, and grown a career as a commercial illustrator, I have come to admire his work as very sharp, clean, and nicely composed. He said that's because he challenged himself not only as an illustrator but as a designer. And no words were truer spoken. HIs covers are gorgeous and there is a generous selection of them on the dustjacket of his book. Infantino was generous with his time with us, and it was a pleasure to meet him for the first time. He seemed well.

I didn't stay long enough to meet Joe Simon, but as I was leaving I saw him being escorted into the hall. He looked pretty dapper, and it was interesting to realize I had laid eyes on true comic book history. At my age, I can still find it easy to go, WOW! That's one of the things I like about our hobby.

I also tired setting up a beachchair next to Blazing Bob's table, feeling that some of his recent posts were a not too veiled cryout for his own posse. But he wasn't having any of it. I seem to keep spending my dough at his table. He has the goods and is so organized it's amazing. I also picked up a few Charltons from the guy next door at Superworld who was very pleasant to deal with also. What's his name again?
