I just received a graded ASM 101 back from CGC and it's listed as a MJ insert. I had no idea and hadn't taken a close look at it before I sent it in. From everything I've read they only started in 1972. Is it possible/accurate that 101 has a mark jewelers insert?

They started in April 1971. #101 should have the insert.

It's a National Diamond Sales insert in that issue:

Yep. Also #102 will not have the insert since it's squarebound issue.

So the ASM #101 is likely a label error?

If it says MJI, yes. It should say NDS.

@Nick Moran - can we see a picture?

Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-man 42 - MJV upside down (rare)

That's cool. I had a double NDS insert in a Spidey #96, but I don't think I've ever seen an upside down insert.

This might interest you HM - my old list of Amazing Spidey's that had inserts that weren't MJ, NDS and Pizzazz:

I always thought it odd that the Bubblicious / Maxwell ad was in both direct and newsstand editions (ASM #245):

And I always liked the different, final Pizzazz type:

I do collect all inserts. Just got the Amazing 262 with the Mark Jewelers and Bose wrap - I think all MJV's have the Bose wrap for the ASM 262 - but I was glad to get it. Also, I do collect any inserts in any books up to like 1995, WAM, Pizzazz, Tattozz, Bubble Yum, Bubblicious, what else, I am drawing a blank, Mennen and Alka-Seltzer wraps, I only have one double cover (Gold Key Tweety and Sylvester)!

Since SW68 is spiking right now I decided to pull a few of mine and reread the story... and lo and behold I found this:

20201226_145108-1.jpg

Strangely though, that issue is not listed in MyComicShop's MJI List as having a MJ insert? I assume every issue through the late 80's had them? Or is that not correct?

MJI’s ran in Marvels until mid ‘91 or so.  Using MCS as a checklist for MJI’s is unreliable, mostly due to them listing issues that have never been found to contain the ad.

I love how you have an image of the interior placed on the outside of the Mylar! It’s probably a lot of work - very cool.

It's actually a double mylite2 Wormboy. I used to cut a Mylite2 to the shape of the comic, add the sticker to the front of that, and then place it against 3 backing boards in a second sealed Mylite2. That way, the sticker was nowhere near the comic and the outer Mylite2 stopped it attracting dust or sticking to the next comic.

The end effect was a solid slab and they looked really cool I have to say. Quite costly though - three boards and two Mylites per comic - but I put all 2,000 ASM's into them back in the day with all the variations noted - here's a few more pics from the files:

The stickers got gradually more advanced as I went along - here's my current project - issue specific stickers for each of the 26 L Miller distribution variants:

It's something to do isn't it :)
