Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, the Copper Edition

31 posts in this topic

We don't really have a thread like this, so I figured I'd start one.

Post your wild swings in Copper prices, from dizzying heights, to radical lows, here.

I'll start.

It wasn't an auction, but the fact that someone was willing to pay $243US for a Hulk #343 in 9.8, surpassing the average value of a Hulk #340 in the same grade, is quite impressive. It is about 25% higher than the highest price ever, but even more significantly, the previous sale, a Heritage sale in December, was only $30 (though that would not have been the case had interested parties known about it.)

Hulk #343 is, by significant numbers, the rarest McFarlane Hulk, and indeed, the rarest McFarlane Marvel of all in 9.8, barring Spectacular Spiderman Annual #10 and covers. With only 10 9.8s, and multiples held in single hands, with collectors actively seeking the book for quite some time, it appears that it may be one of those rare Copper books that just doesn't exist in quantities (as opposed to "not being worth slabbing.")

Or, will the rush of slabs by the usual suspects start appearing....?

Time will tell.

Wasn't Spidey #301 a previously very tough book in 9.8? At least with that one, the high initial prices resulted in mass submissions so the 9.8 numbers swelled.

Interesting to see what happens with Hulk #343.

I wish I never started collecting CGC Hulk books in the McFarlane run.

Your run of books is frickin' sweet. So was it you that pulled the trigger on the British 9.8? That 343 9.6 looks verrrrrry out of place.

Very good point.

I would counter that, however, with the census numbers. Spidey #301 sold for big bucks back in 2008/2009, and the submission numbers swelled. But did they really? There are now 47 9.8s and 6 SS. Nearly 10% of the blue number is submissions by one person (myself.) How many others account for multiple subs?

Since the $1,000 sale in early 2009, the book has sold for no less than $125, and a steady average of $200. That still makes it very much "worth it" to slab.

Compared to #298, 299, and 300, the numbers are tiny. There are 242 #298s, 251 #299s and 310 #300s in 9.8. And only 47 9.8 301s. Without doing double checking, it is (probably) the rarest McFarlane Spiderman that exists after #308.

So, much like Harbinger #1, the numbers did swell...but not in huge numbers. I suspect that it will be one of those books that is simply not as common in 9.8. Production flaws, easy exposure of flaws on the back cover, not a "key" book compared to the previous "big 3"...all sorts of reasons why.

I hope it wasn't. ;) I would sell one of mine for less. :insane:

Are you one of them there "speculator types"? hm

Damn straight. Back issue speculation rocks. And it doesn't affect the struggling new comics market. Yay.

But the book is rare in high grade because it just dings like crazy, and hardly anyone saved them in super high grade.

Hell, no. That wasn't me. I did see that auction, but never considered paying that much for the book. My faith is in RMA right now for a #343.
