Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, the Copper Edition

31 posts in this topic

Here are some swings via GPA (all obvious, but hey):

ASM # 301, 9.8

Sale 1: $275 on 10/27/10

Sale 2: $125 on 10/30/10 (3 days later).

GI Joe # 21, CGC 9.8

Sale 1: $599 on 10/07/10

Sale 2: $295 on 10/19/10

Bone # 1, CGC 9.6

Sale 1: $2,500 on 03/09/11

Sale 2: $1,743 on 05/14/11

I think the granddaddy of them all, though is the issues of Gobbledeygook 1-2 that sold in quick succession recently, first on Heritage; then a different pair via Comiclink.

Anyone have those numbers?

Tick Special Edition # 2, CGC 9.6

Sale 1: $56, 06/03/07

Sale 2: $13, 03/03/08

And yes (of course):

Batman # 428, CGC 9.8 (aka "the yo yo")

Sale 1: $175, 01/19/11

Sale 2: $400, 02/04/11

Sale 3: $250, 02/07/11

Sale 4: $375, 04/28/11

Sale 5: $225, 05/02/11

June 2010 was even worse for this book:

Sale 1: $150, 06/04/10

Sale 2: $150, 06/13/10

Sale 3: $350, 06/26/10

Sale 4: $84, 06/27/10 (That's a 76% drop in one day due to venue arbitrage--Ebay vs. Heritage)

I wish I never started collecting CGC Hulk books in the McFarlane run.

Your run of books is frickin' sweet. So was it you that pulled the trigger on the British 9.8? That 343 9.6 looks verrrrrry out of place.

Hell, no. That wasn't me. I did see that auction, but never considered paying that much for the book. My faith is in RMA right now for a #343.

I'm sure since he went thru the trouble to create this thread that it will be affordable.

Wasn't Spidey #301 a previously very tough book in 9.8? At least with that one, the high initial prices resulted in mass submissions so the 9.8 numbers swelled.

Interesting to see what happens with Hulk #343.

Very good point.

I would counter that, however, with the census numbers. Spidey #301 sold for big bucks back in 2008/2009, and the submission numbers swelled. But did they really? There are now 47 9.8s and 6 SS. Nearly 10% of the blue number is submissions by one person (myself.) How many others account for multiple subs?

Since the $1,000 sale in early 2009, the book has sold for no less than $125, and a steady average of $200. That still makes it very much "worth it" to slab.

Compared to #298, 299, and 300, the numbers are tiny. There are 242 #298s, 251 #299s and 310 #300s in 9.8. And only 47 9.8 301s. Without doing double checking, it is (probably) the rarest McFarlane Spiderman that exists after #308.

So, much like Harbinger #1, the numbers did swell...but not in huge numbers. I suspect that it will be one of those books that is simply not as common in 9.8. Production flaws, easy exposure of flaws on the back cover, not a "key" book compared to the previous "big 3"...all sorts of reasons why.

Let's also add that as far as mcfarlane covers go, it looks terrible. I don't even think he finished the drawing. When compared to 342 or 344 it looks like garbage. IMO only a completist would ever even bat an eye at this book.

+1 agreed. Actually, I think #342 is my favorite cover of the bunch.

BTW, Green, you have a day to get the last 84 points to bump me out of the top copper Hulk set on the registry. Or can I hold on to the title one more year?

I have the books to do it, but I'm not gonna. I like your set enough to leave it at the top for one more year. Your goal is so much more complete than mine it only seems right. Next year however, will be a different story. :sumo::D

Did you see my 369 btw? :baiting:

I like that cover, but i am biased. McFarlane art really jump started my Copper comic obsession. I bought 337 because of the X-Factor cross-over and could not believe what I was seeing. I started tracking down everything he had worked on, (just like everyone else!) and the rest is history.
