Tape on pages not restoration?

Whether you agree with it or not, Steve told me via PM awhile back that CGC considers tape a defect and not restoration.

You won't get the restored designation from CGC but unfortunately, tape is more destructive than other archivally safe types of restorations.

I think the point is that resto that makes (or tries to make) a book look like it originally did needs to get an Apparent grade or there's no way to indicate that what you are looking at reflects enhancement. Tape fixes a book but doesn't pretend to make it look like it used to, so it's just a defect. The irony, of course, is that a stray pen mark is a defect that may slightly impair a Universal grade, whereas a careful, professional bit of removable color touch of the same size sends the book to the PLODsville leper colony
