Observations from the Motor City Con

5 posts in this topic

Well, I went to the Motor City Con today and here is what I took away from it.

DC Superstars #17 in NM. (Has origin of Huntress, Legion & Green Arrow.)

Adventure Comics #448, 450 & 451 all in NM. (Aquaman issues)

Alpha Flight #1 in NM

Avengers #203 & 204 in NM

Batman Family #20 in NM

Superteam Family #4 in NM (Has Solomon Grundy on cover.)

Untold Legend Of Batman #1 – 3 in NM

Justice League #33, 44, 86, 113 varying from VF to NM

X-Men #10 in VF+, plus #173, 214, 215, 216, 217, 218, 219, 220, 221, 222 all in NM

As you can see, a lot of 70’s and 80’s books. Many of these I bought because I used to own them but got rid of them during college. Must be nostalgia for them, because they’re not necessarily worth much. I bought the X-Men (which I didn’t have) just to add to that collection. (It gives me #95 to #222. Heck, they didn’t cost much.)

This show was more frustrating for me. Maybe because I set out looking for a Justice League #2 in F or VF. I didn’t really have a strong back up (my fault) for what I wanted to spend $200 – 300 on. ( I brought $600 to spend but have never been one to use it all on one book. Go figure.) But, the few times I found JLA #2, it was either in G or they were trying to sell a VG copy as F+. So I went to improv Plan B on my List. (I do bring a list with me. I swear it has some books I’ll probably never buy on it. )

Plan B led me to the X-Men #10. It really is one of the nicer copies I’ve seen at the show. (I think that white cover lends to getting messed up.) I’ve passed on #10 for a couple of years, probably in my quest to finish the Justice Leagues. The 4 JLA’s I bought are upgrades for copies I have in Good condition.

One rare book on my list finally popped up at the Show. World’s Finest #71. I think Overstreet may have this one priced too low. The seller wanted $500 (but would take $420) for it. But it was in VG at best (and that might be stretching) and Guide tells me expect around $180.00 in that shape (VG). Now, this seller is good and I’ve bought plenty from him so I can’t knock him. And I can uderstand a premium, but not that much. Maybe it’s just around here, but that book is hard to find. My guess is that it should probably jump in value.

Overall, I got some books to fill holes or just provide with that warm sense of nostalgia. One complaint about Motor City Comic Con overall though. I feel that Porno DVD’s have no business being there. Now, I’m not against porn, but it has it’s place and a Comic Show shouldn’t be it. It’s not the first time it’s been there. Nothing like a big bold sign dominating the back of that booth proclaiming “Adult DVD’s”. And it’s not like they’re that far out of reach for kids. I guess to each they’re own, but if I was running the Show, that would be off limits. Sorry, but I’d turn down the all-mighty booth rental over that. If fan-boy needs porn, there are shops made just for that. (Getting off the soap box now… ) foreheadslap.gif

I agree, they do it in San Diego too, and as a comics fan I think it's degrading.

As far as the World's Finest goes, #71 is not rare or scarce even, and the Overstreet is pretty good on it I think. The twenty issues before it can be quite hard to get though.

$240 for X-Men #10.

I overpaid for the JLA's, especially #113, but those 100 pagers are so hard to find in nice shape. ($50.00 for that one.)

I think I'll skip the Fall Show and try an online source for a change. Any good source to plug those inexpensive runs? (ie. late 80's X-Men, mid-80's Avengers, etc.)
