"American Football" is pretty much an U.S/Canada thing. "Football" is international, and is played in virtually every "civilized" country. I love both sports, but as to your question, there's no contest.

There is only one true football - the one where the ball is played with the foot! The other "football" seems to be a variant of rugby with padding and crash helmets which also features half a billion rest periods (so is almost as boring to watch as cricket or golf!).
