A copy of Brave And The Bold #28 graded CGC 8.5 and valued at $10,000 and a Fantastic Four #5 8.0 were stolen from two different vendors this Saturday within minutes of each other, at Wizard World Mid Ohio.

How are these books stolen at shows? Is it like a smash-and-grab type thing, or is like a con, where one guy asks to look at a book, and another guy asks the business owner a question, leaving the first guy to run off?

Are there so many people at these cons that it's impossible to find someone after then blend into the crowd?

The whole thing sucks. Good luck to the owners in finding the books.

I like the suggestion someone else had in the other thread about videotaping the booth.

Today's hard drive and internet security system storage is relatively inexpensive.

Crazy how a $900 book is being reported as valued at 10k based solely off the owner's ebay auction. I understand someone can list something for sale for whatever price they want, but putting up a BIN at over 10x value in the hopes that some rube falls for it strikes me as dishonest in itself.

I'd also like to know how people are stealing slabs at shows.

Any pictures of the FF?

How is it dishonest? How is it a $900 book? I think your post is a mess move!

Are you sure you are thinking of the right book? $10,000 isn't an unreasonable price.

Putting a book up for sale with BIN for way more than fmv in the hopes that someone who doesn't know any better buys it. OK, maybe it isn't "dishonest", but is hoping to take advantage of someone. Though I imagine most people willing to buy a book for 10k would be able to figure out that book isn't worth anywhere near 10k anyway.

It wouldn't be unreasonable for a blue label. But last 3 PLOD in grade on GPA went for $1613, $610, $950

A blue label 8.0 went for around $4500

Mid Ohio seemed pretty chaotic this year at some booths. I was surprised how many booths allowed practically walk up access to the wall books this year. Add those two thoughts together and I think you have your answer.

That said, I have no idea whose B&B28 was stolen. I know whose FF5 was stolen and I don't think my observations apply there.

I missed that it was a PLOD. With respect to blue labels, the one you cite was from 2008. In 2011, an 8.0 (Savannah pedigree) went for $11 K and a 7.5 went for $10 K.

Yeah, the 10k would be good for a blue label.

I apologize for derailing the thread. I too hope they catch the thieves. Shouldn't be hard to identify the book if it comes up for sale, only problem will be if a collector took it for their own collection.

It looks like an Avengers 4 in 9.2 was stolen as well...it was uploaded onto the site

The stolen comic site has some slight kinks which I have the programmer working on now...then I will be working on the application for ipads and mobile devices..so users get a "pop-up" the second a book is reported stolen....it will be a very simple app..but in a convention setting very powerful as dealers through the convention will know instantaneously if a book is stolen.

#1: Any updates about this yet? Very curious if there's been any word on the street about the joker that ran off with this gem.

#2: Why kind of assmunch valuation is $900 for an 8.5 restored? As described earlier, the GPA values speak for themselves. If I'm not mistaken that same Savannah that sold for 11K got recently resold for an undisclosed amount, but it was listed on Greg Reece's website for 17K....so let's assume somewhere between 11 and 17 for simplicity.

I don't know the man and don't know if he's subject to over-inflating his prices, but I think he's smart enough not to list something at such a prohibitively high price that nobody would ever purchase it.....hell he's in the business of selling comics....not listing them for yucks.
