TORONTO COMICON Presented by Fan Expo Canada™ MARCH 9-10/2013

This is old territory revisited, no Canadian show will ever get on-site grading.

Why? The border, the space needed that the show would have to provide for a grading room and encapsulation room, the equipment and supplies needed to encapsulate the books, the staff required (and all must have valid passports) --- they require lodging and meals, and on top of that there's one simple fact:

- that there has never been any indication that they would get the thousands of books needed to make it financially lucrative at any of the Toronto shows.

Now if a bunch of you wanted to put your money on the line and pool together thousands of submissions --- enough to make it worthwhile for them to consider it, then maybe you could make it happen. Otherwise, save up some money, get your passport, rent a room and drive or fly to an existing on-site show like Chicago or Philly. If that's not worth your while financially, then you understand in part why they aren't coming up.

In your estimation how many thousands of books? If there is a genuine desire here I can provide the lion's share of submissions.

3? At on site pricing.

If 3,000 submissions is all it would take then no problem. I can't talk about the other hurdles and the are a few details I'd have to look into but as far as the volume there wouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure they would be enticed by an offer of 3K guaranteed books at onsite grading prices plus as I mentioned before free ballroom space for a grading room, another for an encapsulation room. Plus I'm sure they would appreciate assistance on how to deal with border crossings and paperwork to get everything (equipment, supplies) in and out of Canada, plus they'll need enough skilled staff with US passports to work the show.

Do you have any interest in helping with that?

Kevin, CGC came to Calgary 3 or 4 years ago. They didn't come back so I imagine they didn't do well. I believe they were just accepting books and not grading at the show.

Correct on both counts. Same with FanExpo 3 years ago.

Also renting 2 board rooms at the adjacent hotel should not be an issue. I could also likely help with paperwork. I can offer no help with passports for staff.

This is a breakdon of what CGC would need to consider to accomplish onsite grading.

The import of items would be broken down into two categories. All items would need to be documented on paperwork, description, origin, value etc..

1. Non-consumable - enscapulation machine, label creation machine, misc peripheral items that aid the process that will be returning

2. Consumable items - empty CGC cases, barex sleeves, blank labels to be printed on etc... generally anything that is anticipated to be left in Canada.

Item 1 goods enter on temporary import, item 2 goods would attract duty and GST; unused item 2 goods are eligible for refund of duty/tax.

Employees would not just need passports, they would need work permits ("sales/traders" are generally waived through immigration but workers producing goods are subject to more requirements) luckily these are fairly easy to obtain under NAFTA.

Usually this is easy to arrange through local Service Canada or HRSDC office - ironically this govt agency also deals with TAT's!

;)

There are costs related to every one of these needs. They'd probably want to register their item 1 goods with US customs prior to exporting it to Canada.

lodging, taxes, shipping their equipment, and getting proper space to work, is EQUALLY an issue at any American convention out of their home state.

Having people with passports so they can get there? lol i hardly think that is a challenge, good grief.

I think the only real issues are getting a guaranteed number of submissions, and someone at the convention to arrange and sponsor it.

What I think a lot of the Americans are failing to realize, is that SHIPPING is the number one downside for getting books slabbed for those outside of the US. On-site grading "prices" are a deal/steal when you consider you arent paying for shipping times TWO, and insurance.

The same is even more so, if they ever did one in the UK. I think if you did it right/advertised properly, at a show the size of FanExpo, you would get more than TEN THOUSAND submissions effortlessly.

That's only 100 people bringing 100 books, or 50 bringing 200 lol. That doesnt even include dealers and stores bringing in boatloads. I know I would try to get 2-300 books in. 3000K will get crushed, absolutely CRUSHED, if there was on-site at fan expo.

Someone would have to open negotiations with CGC, someone would need organize grading commitments with actual numbers so it's not "yes! let's do it" and then when the time comes the person is nowhere to be found (which will happen), and CGC and the convention would need to make some arrangements together.

As for the Toronto ComiCON --- very excited to be there as an exhibitor. I'll be there with my neighbours at 587A College Street --- Guerilla Printing.
