Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man Treasury: oddball signed edition (1976)
1 1

49 posts in this topic

One edition of 2,000 signed by Stan. None 'officially' signed by Carmine, as he was gone from DC before his signature could be collected.

The examples with Carmine's sig are likely from convention appearances by Carmine after the book had already been delivered with Stan's sig.

That said, the Carmine sigs shown here are awesome & should now be sold to me - Greggy, your copy in particular. Sean - yours too because '77 sig dates are tough.

Thanks!

So it looks like the Guide has been wrong for a number of years, and that the "limited edition" run was always 2000 copies, not 5000 per OSPG. Overstreet also calls these "2nd prints", but I think that's nonsense...more likely they were the first batch off the press, overruns, or just part of the total print run.

I'm sure they just grabbed 2K out of whatever the original print run was & set them aside to be signed. (thumbs u

The actual limited edition put out by Marvel seems to require that it be numbered from 1 to 2000 under Superman's cape.

Stan's Signature probably varied and he may have signed them over a period of time.

So some of the ones shown in this thread seem to NOT be part of that limited edition but instead was independently done later probably at conventions.

That's how I see it. I doubt Stan sat down & signed 2K copies in one shot. Sean's '77 sig would lend to that theory as well. I've got some copies with the blue ballpoint pen sig and then others with the felt tip. But I believe the xxxx/2000 numbering was all done with the same pen type.

I really dig the dated ones. Stan and his sig are so ubiquitous these days that it's easy to forget what a big deal something like this must have been back in the '70s, especially if you never had a chance to go to a big convention in New York, or were too young to catch Stan on the lecture circuit...

The above analysis pretty much makes this item an "after-market" set

of copies (at least as far as DC was concerned). CI was gone before

he was called upon to sign any copies. All CI signatures can be

assumed to be convention signings and the SL signatures were

done over a period of time or at conventions.

It would be nice if someone checked with Stan to see what he

remembers. I doubt he ever saw a copy with CI's signature outside

of a convention. (Also worth asking.)

Agree?

Here is more food for thought. My copy is Stan only and has a 1977 date inscribed:

The envelope that it came in has a cancellation date on the postage of March 10, 1977.

Wow you still have the original envelope it came in? That is awesome!

I'm interested in the Marvel Super Special #11-13 limited editions...

The ones signed and limited to 25 each for the Warriors of the Shadow Realm storyline?

Yeah, those are cool, and just hard to find. Too bad there is nearly zero demand for Warriors of the Shadow Realm.

Hmm Why are we even talking about this?

Oh that's right, our insatiable need to show off our knowledge out of nowhere and out of context!

Count me in!

The thread is about signed and limited bronze age "specials." There's nothing "off-topic" about my post, nor was it inspired by any need to "show off."

If what I have to say bothers you to the point where you feel the need to make multiple snide (and inaccurate) comments, you have a problem, and it isn't me.

I recommend you find someone else to obsess about. Your best option is to pretend I don't exist. Anything other than that will create problems for you.

Move on.
