PGM Tales of Suspense #3

11 posts in this topic

THANKS to timern, southerncross, AnhDepTrai, spiderphill, ROBTOTHEC and GAMBIT! for most helpful comments on my last post.

I would like to put up the first three issues of Tales of Suspense to see if it's worth slabbing them; #3 first. Ragged edge courtesy the manufacturer, I do believe. What I DON'T know is how the grade is affected by printer's, as opposed to reader's, error in this case. Thanks in advance for any comments.

That is marvel chipping and though it is printing problem it still affects the grade.

With the chipping and wear I'm at 4.0. And I'm cream/off white pages.

Owl card is handy I use to have them but the printing of the colours on the card can be a little off. Maybe I'm wrong, CGC were hard markers early in the day for page quality. I still have my showcase 75 with bone white pages that came back white on the label. What do the rest of you think regarding this grade and page quality ?

no better than 4.0 for me also. the book presents well but has the accumulation of too many smaller defects. that long diagonal corner crease on the bottom F.C. keeps it out of 4.5 for me.

Thanks one and all. Southerncross, I didn’t know about the coloration of the OWL cards being different. I started using it when selling a few books on eBay, and since I'm not a grading expert, I wanted to provide a point of comparison because different monitors will show color variations. And absolutely, after I have these graded and I will post the results. (I haven't decided what's worth submitting yet; still feeling my way through all this...) Thanks for the info!

If you are selling on e-bay and you use the card just mention that is what you are using for page quality. The cards ok but as you can see it does not have the cream colour. It came out in early 90's and ranking of page whiteness has added that extra class. And grading page quality can be tricky sometimes as you can see I was the only one to try and guess so far.

But selling books and describing the pages is good. Nothing worse buying books in say the 80's where pages should be white to off white and the pages are dark cream.

Well that explains a few things. That gap between colors is rather aggravating. Because of that, I just put the card in my listings (as above) and let it do the talking, rather than state what color I think it is, 'cause it's always in between anyway. Thanks again. Putting up Tales #2 today.

4.0 IMHO. There are two large creases that prevent me from guessing a higher grade. The edge chipping I believe is referred to as "Marvel Chipping" but from what I have read is common on books of other publishers too from the 50's and 60's era. Some of the other boardies will likely be able to confirm this.
