PGM Tales of Suspense #41 with staple question

5 posts in this topic

Thanks again to everyone who posted comments on my early Tales of Suspense. I'd like to put up a few of my "problem" books to get an idea how certain flaws affect the grade. Pretty nice issue of this one, I think, but tears at the cover staples, and a bad tear at the top staple. Any opinions appreciated.

Wow! That book looks great! I'm thinking 8.0 with the staple tears. A little bit of edge wear on the top and bottom but overall a real beauty! (thumbs u Missed the back cover scan and noticed the edge tear in the middle of the back cover LHS, this might knock it down to 7.5 ???

That defect (paper which gets torn at a staple) is the one I loathe most, but I am not sure how it should be treated in grading.

Staple tears do not worry me: they can bring down the grade, but if the book is beautiful (like this one) they are not annoying. A staple rip, inversely, is bound to produce a cover detachment, and I don’t feel comfortable reading books with this defect.

Also, a good number of SA Marvels seem to have a similar problem: i.e. the staple cleanly gets pulled through the cover, and the cover detaches. This would bring down the grade of 1.5 to 2 points.

In this case it’s not detached, so I’d say 1.0 to 1.5 grades less.

Such a beauty of a book should not grade lower than 7.0 (maybe 7.5?), anyway, IMO.

Thanks, makeminemego. Thanks, timern, for helping me out on all my postings. Vaillant, I much appreciate you taking the time to provide that analysis. Yes, it is definitely uncomfortable reading a book that might come apart on you; this one is now safely bagged and I guess it'll have to stay that way.

I have a few more "problem" books I'd sure like your opinions on, hoping to post those soon.
