PGM Fantastic Four #1 with "streaking" of color

14 posts in this topic

Believe it or not, this book was purchased in a sealed "three-pack" in 1961 for 15 cents. I don't know if they still do this, but they used to unload imperfect books, or ones that didn't sell, in that way. (Sometimes they'd have the title cut off 'cause the dealer had returned them unsold, but the one on top was the "best" one, and it was always complete. You wouldn't know what the other two were until you opened the pack.) This one's imperfection was the streaking of the color you see on both covers, and those little "tics" of color loss (on "Fantastic," for instance) MAY have come with it (not certain about that). Too bad... but I never would have acquired FF #1 otherwise! Grateful for any opinions on how those flaws affect the grade. Thanks!

Thanks to one and all. Very helpful comments. Timern, I have not found such a flaw either, at least in my time on eBay and Heritage (and I really don’t know where else to look) but I appreciate your effort and your comment, as always. And yes I am the original owner, and this one is going to CGC very soon. I’ll post the results when I get it back. Thanks again!

As is 7.0, would probably press a little higher. The streaking is a production defect that would not effect the grade ( at least for CGC), but could effect value, though the story behind it is great and might ameliorate that. A good story can increase the perceived value of an item, that's why collectors pay more for pedigrees.

Awesome book, and even more awesome that you still have it.

Actually this is not so uncommon, I’m not talking of comics but printed material in general: probably it’s not, strictly speaking, a printing defect, but it just got "rubbed" when the ink wasn’t completely dry yet.

Oh, no, I would not CGC such a book for all the gold of the world, unless you are planning to sell it, of course, :)
