Batman #400 Cover Creases Help

15 posts in this topic

Hey All,

This is my first post here, but I've been checking out different threads for a while now, and I must say this seems a very informative and friendly place :)

I'm only a few months into collecting comics (and loving it!) and I'm really interested in improving my grading abilities. I've researched how to grade and different defects etc., but of course there is a load I can learn from here.

Right now, I need some help with grading my copy of Batman #400. I bought this a few days ago from my local comic shop. The owner, who grades all his back issues, had it graded at NM. Now, usually he is very accurate (I think), but not so this time.

Unfortunately, and stupidly, I bought the comic without taking it out of the bag and carefully looking at the back and insides. I suppose I was going to have to learn that lesson sooner or later anyway.

But now, I have noticed about six large and very obvious creases on the back cover. I graded the book at an 8.0 ignoring the creases, because I'm not sure what they will bring the grade down by.

If any of you could help, it would be greatly appreciated :)

The creases are in the lower half of the cover. Sorry about the big images too, I'll try fix that for later posts.

Thanks!

Help is here!

Never apologize for large images here. :-P

Sadly I'd give this book a 6.0 because of the ripples... they could be pressed out though, and then I would give your book an 8.0. Yes that much of a swing from me.

Oh and usually if a book has one major defect on an otherwise NM/VF+ it lowers it two grades... IF they count all those ripples as one defect...

+1 :o Have you spoken with the LCS owner about the creases on the back and whether or not he was aware of them? :o

Thanks for all the replies fellas :) Knew this was a friendly place!

Those creases are a pretty major defect, so yeah, judging from your responses, a 5.5 to a 6.0 seem about accurate. It's a pity, since the front cover is quite nice.

Thanks for the help though :) I will bring this back to the LCS, and I'll show the owner how I graded it and why, I can't see him having a problem with it.

Once again, thanks for the help, another little bit of knowledge and experience to help me with my grading :)

That back cover is mangled. I can't see it getting better than a 3.5/4.0.

I'd be seriously ticked off if I picked up that book as a Fine, much less a NM. If you have a relationship with the store owner just take it back.

+1

Be aware that the owner will likely not take it back as he "believes" he sold you a NM copy and you are now bringing it back in a "different" condition.

Hey everyone,

Just a quick update on this. I was in my LCS today, and I asked the owner to have a look at this comic. I pointed the creases and the other relatively minor things (stress lines, staple tear etc.) out to him.

He apologised for missing the creases, and agreed that a grade of 6.0 is accurate. I kept the comic anyway (I believe it is, whenever manageable, a good idea to get a decent grade copy, then when the collection is near complete, you can upgrade copies) and as such he dropped the price significantly, and I chose to have my 'refund' added onto my store credit, because in all fairness, I'm just going to spend that money on more comics!

So once again, thanks for your opinions :)
