4GEMWORKS
Honestly it comes down to what the owner of the book wants to do. For me it mostly comes down to what if something happens to me and my wife or kids needs to sell my books. Much easier done if they are graded. I happen to have an arrangement with Heritage in just that case. Ghastly542454, Point Five and OtherEric
Popular Post OtherEric
EC's are scarce on the ground at ECCC this year, other than the humor books. I like Comics McCormick (probably a Supersnipe rip off) but usually a fun read. I’m still looking for that one. jimjum12 and OtherEric

I thought about getting it but passed with it only having 1 bid at $84. Maybe I should've grabbed it. As said, it's an EC #1. I like the art for Comics McCormick better. The "bigfoot" Ed Wheelan style is deceptively good, and of course, you are always reminded of R. Crumb. Popular Post Robot Man
Thought some of you folks might be interested. I'm good on all of these. I did call about the Subby #1 and the other Timelys but must have just missed them... Side note. Anybody else remember when CSS #22 and 23 were worth the same price? And "NM" in those days are probably 7.0-8.0 now. Sarg, vaultkeeper, ThothAmon and 5 others

Popular Post KirbyJack
As evidenced by the Shock 1 price range, back in the day there was a much smaller spread in the prices between good and nm. I, always one to maximize my collecting dollar, consistently passed over those outrageously expensive high grade books to find low grade bargains! I'm pretty sure it was already shifting when I got my CSS 23... but not by nearly as much as now. Is CSS #22 the most valuable New Trend book these days? The only ones that I can think of that might compete are The Crypt of Terror issues. (I am counting the Crime Patrol/ War Against Crime issues with the early Crypt Keeper/ Vault Keeper appearances as late Pre Trend here, although they're pretty much the definition of "on the edge") Edited March 9, 2023 by OtherEric
Popular Post KirbyJack
I would put CSS 22 right in the top 5 or so in terms of current market value. KirbyJack
You would certainly have a more current idea about what things are selling for, however.

Less than you might think, none of the ones you list are on my realistic hope to get list. I think Shock #6 is tickling the bottom of the top 5, as well. And who knows what a Shock Illustrated #3 would do when it hit the market. KirbyJack and vaultkeeper

I guess most thought of it as just another gory EC cover. Also, CSS was low on the collectible EC totem pole. Most EC collectors were into horror, sci-fi, or MAD. Popular Post KirbyJack
CSS 22 has a lot of appeal to non-EC people (weirdos); cover collectors, PCH dabblers who just want an EC example. SOTI, etc. It gets a lot of crossover bids. OtherEric, goldust40, vaultkeeper and 2 others 4
Popular Post bronze johnny
CSS 22 has a history that places it above every precode crime and horror issue. It isn’t just an EC Comic, it’s the one that is forever synonymous with Wertham’s “comic book causes juvenile delinquency” narrative, Kefauver and the U.S. Senate investigation into the comic book publishing industry, and the greatest publisher of the most significant comic book publishing house that produced the best and for some, most notorious, comics of the post-war period, Gaines himself. Crime Does Not Pay 22 started the precode era that ended with CSS 22. Gaines tried one last time to keep the precise essence of EC Comics going but realized it was over with Incredible Science Fiction 33. CSS 22 not only has one of the greatest covers of the precode era but also for the reasons I mentioned above and you can’t put a price on history. The story that adds definition to the impact of Johnny Craig’s classic decapitation cover will continue to contribute to the book’s aging like the finest of all wines and become the most significant precode comic book. It’s tied for first place with Crime Does Not Pay 24 in this year’s Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide’s top crime comic books keys. Only a matter of time when CSS 22 surpasses CDNP 24 and the most valuable precode horror books in terms of value despite their being relatively scarcer. The story of CSS 22, Gaines, and EC Comics grows… Edited March 11, 2023 by bronze johnny Raze, Larryw7, vaultkeeper and 6 others
