I've got a new catalog to look for...

Rather surprised that you are not aware or have a copy of this catalogue as Adam has posted the contents of it on a couple of other occasions in the past.

Adam;

Do you remember the name of the person that picked up the Action #1?

He was a soft spoken Chinese gentleman and I believe he was in the medical field from somewhere in the San Francisco area or thereabouts.

Wonder if he still has it today or if it is one of the previously graded and sold copies? hm

People should memorize all my posts :preach:

No idea. I only knew 3 or 4 of the people that attended and was a bit overwhelmed by the occasion. :blush:

Thanks for your response, Adam! (thumbs u

Although I spoke with him for a few minutes about the Action 1 and he mentioned his name to me, my memory is absolutely terrible when it comes to names. doh!

From speaking with him though, I got the impression that he had come out on Snyder's personal invitation and possibly given first option on this particular book. I do not believe he was a full-blown comic book collector like most of the other people there and was certainly not part of the Saturday feeding frenzy the next morning.

Probably not an easy brochure to find.

It took me a few years to find the 1993 Sotheby's catalog, so I've been down this road before :)

I'm pretty sure Sotheby's catalog was created in much larger volumes. :)

Unless Diamond has a bunch of these lying around it won't be easy given the limited number of comic people attending the opening.

This may have been sent out to Diamond accounts at the time, or maybe given out at one of the early retailer seminars...? I sure do recognize that cover.

That could be. In a subsequent Diamond Retailers newsletter it mentions that anyone can order it.

I was under the impression that DA was able to get a different Bat 1 that was extremely high-grade, but was NOT the Church copy. There was a story back in the day in a magazine or price guide where Bob Overstreet wanted his Bat 1 and he said only if you can find me a nicer one, then Dave Anderson (not the dentist, but the one in Tulsa) dug up an uber-HG original owner for him.

I am sure that Anderson has the Church Batman #1. Steve Borock visited Anderson and mentioned that it was an absolute killer!

In retrospect I think I was confusing it with the All Star 3.

That's how I heard the story, with the AS 3.

I see a few boardies, including our own Lou Fine and another boardie who wishes to remain anonymous!

I also see Gary/Moondog, who might not have been as awed by the proceedings and might remember who Dean/Lou Fine is referring to.

Sorry I am new to this string. I guess I can comment on any number of items here as I am privileged to have been a part of many of the proceedings. More than one can realize.

However, I know the person described, he was a long time client and friend whose interest spanned Disney to Superhero, comics to art. He has not been active for a number of years.

We supplied Geppi with several of the items included in the brochure and I purchased and still have what was a centerpiece, the original cover art for "a Christmas For Shacktown" by Carl Barks the only Four Color cover art by Barks known to exist. The interesting part of the exhibit was that most of the key books were from the Overstreet collection. Steve had never offered any prior to this point and priced them where he never thought he would sell many. To his surprise, the rush for the keys, especially by Dave prompted Steve and John to stop selling the books during the exhibit!

I was at the Gallery Opening and remember chatting with Adam Strange there. I do know who bought the Action #1 but would not reveal it without his permission. Joe V. Picked up the Batman #1 which now grades 9.2, and the All American # 16 did have a coupon cut out of the back cover, but it was replaced by Mark Wilson. The front cover of the AA 16 looked like a 9.6, but with a major bc defect.

I remember picking up the Wonder World # 7 (Allentown), Terrific #5 (vf), Human Torch # 8 (San Francisco/Riley), and Strange Adventures #21 (White Mountain).

I remember the guests were initially in the downstairs Lobby when Snyder said "who warns to be the first to take the elevator up to see the books displayed). I remember myself, Fishler, Joe V. , and Dave Anderson, Dan from Showcase New England, and someone else jumping in that first elevator and then being stunned seeing all the key books being displayed in lighted cases. After everyone was up they decided to bring out the Overstreet collection, box by box and there was such a feeding frenzy that a few thousand dollars was paid by one dealer to another collector when he was handed the Timely box. The money was paid just to be the first to look through the box!!

It was one in a lifetime event"!

I wondered if that was the one. Someone noted here years ago that it also appeared in a Sotheby's auction at some point that decade, apparently.

Great info from all who were there. :applause:

Joe;

That's good to know!

Any idea if the Action 1 is still ungraded and privately held or if it is one of the previously graded and sold copies that we have already seen?

Rick;

I assume he must have been asking me for my opinion of the food and beverage services as part of their customer survey. lol

Actually, this is probably the point where he was telling the doofus to stop focusing on the free goodies as most of the books in the display cases had already been scooped up by Fishler and his gang by then. Being the newbie to these types of events, I had simply tagged along with the non-comic book big-wig politicians and baseball players for a tour of the Diamond offices and facilities. No doubt the experienced dealers bypassed the tour and went straight for the books in the display cases which I had mistakenly thought were for display purposes only and not for actual sale at the time. doh!

BTW: That Fantastic Comics #1 was an absolute killer book with the blood-red cover and almost 3-D like with Samson jumping right out from the cover. Unfortunately for me, it was one of the books scooped up by Fishler right off the bat. I believe the Victory #1 was another absolutely killer book and still available at the time, but just could not see myself spending almost $5K for that particular book.

I did not hear he sold it but I will have to check.

Yes, you are exactly right as I could not remember if this book had been picked up by Joe V. or Dave A.

I remember Dave expressing interest in the book and commented to me either at the time or in a prior telephone conversation that he was interested in the Overstreet copy. I believe his interest stemmed from the fact that it was a unrestored copy as opposed to virtually all of the known pedigree copies at the time which had some form of restoration work on them. I guess it turned out that it was not nicer than the copy he had in his own collection at the time.

Not sure about the CGC census, but would this be the highest graded unrestored Batman 1 to this point in time? This would be rather surprising due to the apparent abundance of Bat 1's out there relative to the other key GA books. hm

If that is the 9.2 then it is the current top census. The 9.2 has a light erasure on it to the right of Batman's cape, and I couldn't quite tell from the catalog scan if that was there on that copy.

When the current 9.2 first emerged as a 9.0 in 2004, Stephen Fishler noted some surprise as to the grade: "This is the copy that was graded VF- at the 1994 Christies auction. If memory serves, it sold for $28,000"

Of course, that copy re-emerged as a 9.2 when it was sold to Anthony Chiofalo.

So, if the copy shown in the catalog is the Overstreet copy, then that doesn't quite fit with the above info, and perhaps they are not the same. hm

Ah, yes......the days of sweet innocence when the general marketplace was not yet aware of the CPR gaming of the system.

Rather surprised that Fishler was apparently not one of the ones in the know as he had also raised questions at the time with some of the upgrades when they were first flagged on the boards here a year or so later. :o
