Original art.. what is the difference?

Cartoon cels as far as I know haven't been the target of forgery and would be difficult to fake. Also they don't sell for that much so I don't think it would be worth the effort.

You're wrong.

Actual production cells are pretty expensive; those with original backgrounds are even more expensive.

The majority of cells you see for sale were not used in the making of cartoons but were mass-produced to be sold. That's why you always see a ton of cells out there with great shots and great poses.

Define expensive-none of them reach OA page prices. The most expensive ones I've seen are maybe 2-3K.

Ave cels can go for $50

Plenty go for a couple bucks

None? Kav, you really need to ask more and state less.

Production cells can cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. They likely don't sell for as much as original art, but there are also a lot more out there. Even cells from later Disney films can run in the thousands of dollars.

There were 8 (or more) cells needed for every second of animation, so a 10-minute short would have... well, you do the math. (Compare that to 22 pages of a comic book.) Also, there were often more than 1 cell in use during any one shot (so there may be one cell for Pluto and another cell for Mickey), to make it easier to animate. That makes for even more.

So there were a lot more made. Not that many survived -- in some instances the paint was washed off the cell and the cell was re-used -- but that goes for most older comic art too.

And they used to go for even more before a couple, very high profile, buyers stopped participating in auctions several years ago.

Look, 1980s and 90s Filmation cells don't cell for mess. But nobody wants that. But you can get original art from comics for under $10 for series/artists that aren't famous/popular/good.

I bought a Ren & Stimpy cel from Bob Camp. I don't really care about the value, I'm just psyched to have something from the best cartoons ever (after the classic WBs of course).
