Comics; a gateway to perversion?

Perhaps I am stretching things a bit here but the notion of SOTI really stigmatized comics and I think in some ways people still believe in it to this day. The fact is IMO that children reading [anything is better than not reading. That mother does sound rather Wertham-esque but perhaps she is just mad at her kid for calling out sick. I am not a parent or an educator but that is just my take on it .Call me biased but thats how my parents raised me. It calls to mind Japanese manga where there is no comics code authority but rather a reliance on strict parenting. Call me biased again but when I think of the Japanese I think of a fairly well educated society. SO that would just tie back to my original point of some adults just looking for an easy scapegoat to blame their children's woes on. Wertham  was a liar but all in all the damage was already done, and it is a stigma we live with to this day. :makepoint: Imagine that folks an educator teaching...huh!

What happened to parents raising their children?
That's what a parent is doing when they are vigilant about what types of material the child has access to. Some parents go overboard, but would you be okay with a guy passing out Hustler magazines to children?

Why not? What ever happened to raising your children?

Different people draw the line different places, and that's okay. Some kids can handle a Freddie movie, some can't. It's ultimately the parent's decision though. And with the state of the mainstream comics industry, I can't completely blame a parent for wanting to say no.

I think the real lesson here is how the rest of the world perceives comic collectors.

It's a slippery slope.

My sister used to teach 4th grade. For a few years, near the end of the year, I'd come in and give a comic book presentation to the kids. I'd always bring books to hand out at the end to all the kids.

My LCS would donate some (usually FCBD leftovers) and I'd pull some out of my longboxes to take in. I'd give them 2-3 books each.

Before the presentation, my sister would send home a permission slip for the parents to sign saying it was OK for their child to get the books.

Best to never assume anything. Always cover your arse.
