Comics you probably should own but can't bring yourself to pay for?

Batman #200 was the last Adams Bat I needed to complete the run. I really didn't want to spend very much on it and to be honest, I'm not crazy about the book itself either. It's clearly SA, which I don't collect, and the cover itself is not all that great either. I did eventually find a very nice copy at a relatively cheap price so I'm satisfied for now with no desire to upgrade.

Same for Bats 222, although I did wind up spending WAY too much on this book. I needed it just to fill the hole and as popular as this book is for some folks, it really doesn't spark that much pride of ownership for me like it should.

Put me in the camp for Hulk 181 as well. Had a beautiful copy back in the day when I was originally collecting. I "should" pursue this book today, but I just can't get myself interested in owning it or footing the price tag for a nice copy.

On the fence about Batman Adventures #12. I love Harley, but the book is inflated right now and I don't really buy a lot of books older than 1980 to begin with.

What is causing BA #12 to be inflated? I just checked GPA and 9.6 and 9.8 have almost doubled in value over the past month.

Marvel Preview 4.

Commands a hefty price tag given that it was a discount bin regular 2-3yrs ago. Hopefully when the hype dies down I'll be able to own one.

I know that…I own one…but why is Harley spiking in popularity right now? There isn't any TV, movie, or video games driving the value up or causing speculation.

Being a completionist and a bit of an obsessive list-checker, I have one book missing from truely completing an otherwise anal retentive collection of Hellboy comics.

The comic (really a fanzine) I'm talking about is Dime Press #4. The cover has an appearance of a prototype Mignola Hellboy jumping Nathan Never (who, for some reason has batwings and a tail??).

Just wondering if anyone else has a comic (or comics) that they logically should own but can't bring themselves to acquire; not because they can't afford it or they can't find a copy available for sale, but simply because it doesn't seem relevant to you? Or the cost just seems so completely out of wack with reality for what it comprises? Or it's just so dumb or over-hyped you feel like it morally objectionable to pay for?

In the case above (in my mind, I try to justify relevence), Hellboy is the wrong color, is missing his characteristic trench coat and sidearm. He also doesn't appear anywhere in the comic interior. It is one single illustration of him not even a full composition with a background. And probably most importantly, the book itself is in Italian and I don't read or speak Italian. So even if there was the most increadible story in the universe lying in it's pages, I wouldn't be able to understand it.

And yet due to it's arguably appearant rarity (1500 copies? Unconfirmed; Possibly more) it garners a very high asking price on Ebay.

I should add in regards to relevance, as part of my Hellboy collection, I even have a copy of Frank Miller's Sin City: Hell and Back, where the only appearance of Hellboy is in a single cell where his disembodied head appears during a hallucination sequence. But! This otherwise irrelevant appearance of Hellboy didn't cost me more than $1.50. And perhaps ironically, I felt the cost more reasonably reflected the relevance.

But in the case above, Dime Press #4, despite lacking any real hellboy content somehow manages to overshadow by multitudes in price smaller runs such as: The Wild Hunt Variant (limited to 1k) which in my experience can be had for as little as $45-60 and actually is a comic that people can read and enjoy and chock full of relevent content.

So, is there a comic out there that you probably should have in your collection, but you just can't bring yourself to buy (even if you had the money)?

Just curious.

To save some time and efforth i could almost paste your (interesting and well written) post.

Being an hellboy fan, the Dime Press will be a comic that i will never have, just to have the "prototype character" in the cover.

I would be happy to own the Next Men 21 and the San Diego Con 2, those could make me in the future to spend some money on them (more affordable).

Heck, i see in your signature the fury variant, those are far more interesting and neat to own than the Dime Press, so kudos.

Enjoy what you have and don't fret out about what's lacking...

On another note, i've always loved Thanos for ex:, in the past whenever i could have bought a copie of IM55 at an affordable price, there was always other comics being bought that would caught my eye and now i'm struggling with the idea of having "lost the ship" that could have lead me to it.

Detective Comics 411 - how much !?!

+1 This one and Savage Tales #1 are the corner stones to my May 1971 set that I'm trying to build. I just can't shell that kind of money out. I'm hoping to grab a few really nice other books and get them graded and possibly trade for them.

TTA 13 and Mystery Tales 40. Two Atlas / Marvel books that have been hyped to the moon, and yet they are all that is standing between me and completed runs of those titles.

May have to wait a while before those books come down to earth.

...."in a comic book".

For what the book actually is, yes it is extremely over priced.

I should own Amazing Spider-man 300 and New Mutants 98.

But I can't bring myself to pay the hyper-inflated prices. It's not that I can't afford it, but for the money there are cooler books out there.

I should own ASM # 129. That would give me a complete run from # 100 - 700. But so far I have not been able to justify buying it.......to the wife.

You have the first Morbius then, that's another ridiculously expensive copy in the set.

Well, it has gotten more expensive in the last two years.

I consider the pricing of #100 more annoying… I still miss it but have a nice #101 (and a lowgrade #129 which I should receive, grabbed from a great boardie).

Ditch the wife . . . (unless that's her in your avatar) . . . then ditch the Spideys instead! lol

Bats 181. :sumo: After having owned and sold over a dozen copies over the years, it has now gotten much harder to find a decent copy at a reasonable price. Same goes for Tec 359 :(

FF #45 and ST #110 in 8.5-9.0 slabbed.

thanks to movie hype/speculation/rabid consumerism, I may never own one of either on those grades. but I'll wait..and wait. :wishluck:

The sad part is that the hype has pushed those books past the point of likely ever finding them on a deal again. I know there's some back-and-forth flux in comics, some are worth money now and in five years they won't - but I don't see that happening to SA books.

I liken it to vintage cars. When I was 19 (in 1992), I passed up the opportunity to buy a 1969 Super Bee for $1500. I just couldn't afford it on my wage at the time. Ever since, I've always wanted to own a Mopar, whether it's a Super Bee, Charger, Cuda, Road Runner or Challenger. They have never, ever gone down in value and are saught after by collectors who have way deeper pockets than I do. Now, 22 years later - I have come to the conclusion I will never own one because the price has gone up so far, I simply can't justify spending $30,000 on a car I had to pass up for $1500.

The point is that hype and speculation may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a very real thing going on, driving up value and springboarding these books to unattainable status - which a lot of them may not ever come back down to - at least the SA stuff. Bronze is a little more forgiving, IMHO.
