Comics you probably should own but can't bring yourself to pay for?

Amazing Spider-Man #1.

I've been working on an ASM run, but #1 will be the last book I buy. And I'll probably settle for the Golden Record Reprint.

I hate the cover of ASM #1, and Amazing Fantasy #15 is the true key 1st appearance.

There is no way I want to spend the money on it.

I would like to comment that purchases that I seemed to pay too much for at the time are now paying the biggest benefit. Hulk 1 was always expensive but I'm sure glad I have one now. If you have goals and are trying to build a collection with a certain focus you need to 'bite the bullet' at some point. I also suggest you utilize trade to reach your goals.Having said that, I never acquired a TTA 27 because I never felt it was a true first appearance. I've never found the 'right copy' of Flash 105. I traded my Walking Dead 1 too early and still need a copy.

Batman #200 was the last Adams Bat I needed to complete the run. I really didn't want to spend very much on it and to be honest, I'm not crazy about the book itself either. It's clearly SA, which I don't collect, and the cover itself is not all that great either. I did eventually find a very nice copy at a relatively cheap price so I'm satisfied for now with no desire to upgrade.

Same for Bats 222, although I did wind up spending WAY too much on this book. I needed it just to fill the hole and as popular as this book is for some folks, it really doesn't spark that much pride of ownership for me like it should.

Put me in the camp for Hulk 181 as well. Had a beautiful copy back in the day when I was originally collecting. I "should" pursue this book today, but I just can't get myself interested in owning it or footing the price tag for a nice copy.

On the fence about Batman Adventures #12. I love Harley, but t he book is inflated right now and I don't really buy a lot of books older than 1980 to begin with.

What is causing BA #12 to be inflated? I just checked GPA and 9.6 and 9.8 have almost doubled in value over the past month.

Harley Quinn 1st App.

I know that…I own one…but why is Harley spiking in popularity right now? There isn't any TV, movie, or video games driving the value up or causing speculation.

Tight fitting outfit and large boobs = big fanboy bucks

I think a lot of people use it for something other than reading material

ARE you not tormented by how much money you have already spent on what you have and if part of it would have gotten you one of those books? Do these dark thoughts never cross your mind... what if, what if....?

There's a lot of comics I'd love to have but never will because of cost. No matter how much money I have I don't feel right owning a comic worth more than a couple hundred dollars, so no Albedo #2 for me.

This thread's alternate title is "OVERPRICED KEYS THAT YOU DON'T OWN AND ARE WILLING TO WAIT 'TIL HELL FREEZES OVER FOR A MARKET CORRECTION"

Here are ones that randomly come to mind, in no particular order:

1. Hawkman 4

2. TTA 27

3. TTA 44

4. IH 181

5. All post-1976 keys published by Marvel/DC that I don't own.

I don't regret any of my big purchases. My desire to own has pretty much determined the order I've bought expensive books.

But I most definitely have been looking at some of my long boxes of "stuff" thinking it's time to sell and go quality instead of quantity. I set up at a local con for the 1st time last weekend and sold some of the absolute drek of my collection. I did pretty good too, so now I'm debating selling more. hm

Cool answer... Wasn't picking on you as such, it's just a thought that pops into my own head from time to time and was summoned up by some of the responses in this thread. GLWTS.

Sometimes collecting feels like you are walking a tightrope of trying not to head off down the slippery slopes whilst weighing up if the sum of a few small items over time is less than the one big purchase it could have been.

My top 5 run-breakers:

1 - Tales of Suspense 39

2 - Fantastic Four 12

3 - X-Men 4

4 - Flash 105

5 - Tales to Astonish 44

Mega-keys like FF1, Hulk 1, AF15, Showcase 4 and others are not considered, I don't spend enough to nab any of them fairly.

Honorable mention goes to Batman 181, which is common as sand at the beach around here, but always gets posted at 5:30 in the afternoon when I finish at 6! :pullhair:

Good list. I had Bats 181 in mind as over-priced. Go on eBay and there are a gizzillion copies.

I should own Amazing Spider-man 300 and New Mutants 98.

But I can't bring myself to pay the hyper-inflated prices. It's not that I can't afford it, but for the money there are cooler books out there.

ASM 300, indeed. I have owned 6 NM 98s, but for some reason I've never seen a nice ASM 300 for $5.

Books that I feel that I should have but have NEVER owned:

New Mutants 98

Fantastic Four 1

Tales of Suspense 39

Avengers 1

Books that I owned at one point but feel I should still have:

Batman 181

Batman 232

Batman 234

GI Joe 1-155 Special Missions 1-30 Yearbook 1-4

ASM 300 is a good one. I've owned a few but haven't bit the bullet to pick another one up.

Batman #222 - sorry, ain't payin' thru the nose because the Ruttles are on the cover

I keep saying that same thing... but I will probably break down and buy that book before all of the others that I listed.

You remember the issue? It is actually a decent read.

Not in high grade. ;)

Plenty of low to mid grade copies are available, though.

Once she starts to pop up more regularly in Gotham this book could go higher.
