they have no problem presenting it correctly in their marketing materials

Welcome to 21st Century Corporate America.  Perhaps I've just been unlucky, but I've never, ever, received a "fast food" burger or taco that looked anything like the menu presentation.

I truly believe that marketing specialists (all marketing specialists) live in an alternate universe.  Now, excuse me while I step away to get a bite to eat.  lol  :hi:

@Brittany M.

I have notified the QC manager and someone else about this.  I made the trip to CGC yesterday, and spoke for about half of the duration of the QC meeting.  Had I known about this problem, I would have certainly brought it up then.

Ya I've never seen their marketing material show Newton rings or scratches all over the case.

My lovely mechanical error arrived back with the correct label... But he'll of a lot of scratches

Thank you! Hopefully there could be a correction before the bulk of the subs get encapsulated. Otherwise I suspect the possibility of a massive inflow of resubs coming to CGC. That "Mcfarlane" scroll is a great idea for a label but the "Mcfarlan" version is👎

I can imagine this is you trying to speak at a QC meeting there:

What kind of QC department is there if the most obvious of things like poorly designed labels get through?

Constantly.

These aren't 9.8 books with overlooked tears, missing pages or missing cover...  This went through an actual design process and an approval process.  But it's the forum members who have to point out the problem before they do anything about it ?!

Lol...

It does boggle the mind.  It should have been corrected immediately after the first slab with the custom label was put together.

Almost like this is the first custom label they've done where the hologram covers the stupid custom label lol

It should be noted that the Newton ring problem has been addressed, at least for the most part. That was a huge deal around here once upon a time! The slabs themselves are *mostly* in good shape. The label mishaps are another matter.

I've been trying, without any knowledge of their internal processes, to sort of puzzle out what goes wrong to create their various errors, because that's ... actually a lot like what I have to do for my real, actual job and so its good practice, if nothing else. Some of the problems are pretty clearly attributable to their software system and its associated processes. It's obvious, with a little knowledge of data management, that there are some "creaky parts" to their software solutions. Makes sense, this whole thing scaled up way beyond what they probably anticipated when they launched, and it's a beast to do bespoke software upgrades in an environment where you can never go production-down and where continuity of legacy data is literally your business. A lot of the label mishaps almost certainly happen because of this.

The case scuffing doesn't seem likely to be a supply-side problem (I'm sure they're not getting pre-scuffed cases), so there's probably some point in the process -- either somewhere in the actual encapsulation equipment, or in the physical transit from logistics supply to encapsulation to shipping -- where physically moving the slabs has a risk of rubbing against a surface and creating scuffs. It's clearly not something that happens all the time. I've never had a visibly scuffed slab. But it does seem to happen in batches since we see people with a whole boxes of scuffy plastic. That suggests that it's not random and makes me think encapsulation is the likely culprit. I would have whoever is in charge of encapsulation see whether there's a potential for a tech to do something a little bit wrong (moving slab components or the completed slab in or out of a machine too quickly, for example) that might result in these scratches.

The one that really baffles me is the plastic shards that get encapsulated from time to time. Hairs and random bits of dust or whatnot, sure. Those suck, and are going back for mechanical error reslabs, but I don't think anyone really expects the CGC encapsulation floor to be operated like a chip-fab clean room. But there shouldn't be random bits of broken plastic just hanging around. Those have to have broken off something, and it feels like that should be extremely easy to identify. We don't see lots and lots and lots of them, but they've been going on for a long time, and it's very strange to me, from an Operations Excellence standpoint, that they still happen.

Wish me luck...Contacted CGC Customer Service yesterday, awaiting response still...

Most recent sub that just shipped has not 1, not 2, but THREE Book swaps in my order!! :censored:

image.thumb.png.00856ba8969807f2159f587c7596a232.png

Swap #1:

So, this was a clean run of Sandman #1-20, plus the Death Gallery and #69.

All the way up to Grading/Quality Control, my #8 was there... and, once it went to Shipped, magically my #8 switched to a garbage #50!! (Line item #9)

Swap #2:

Sandman #1 was in the same range as all these books. And, to boot, my sub all went to CCS. What are the graders notes on #1:

image.png.ce2a8234df68aa184b588783f81b579e.png

Looks like "good pressing defects" to me...

Swap #3:

I most certainly did not send in Sandman #20 (line item #21) with "Name Written on Cover in Marker"... all my signed Sandman books on covers went to C**S, not here... I never had a signed #20....

...sigh....

Of course, 2 of these 3 swaps are the most valuable.. naturally...

I suspect this occurred sometime after grading and before encapsulation where my books got swapped with someone else's. Let's see what CGC says...

Unfortunaly, I do not have all photos of this entire sub.. I only have some (#1 and #8). It was sent in February before all the recent shenanigan's so I never thought I needed to worry... plus these are not super "high value" books, but reasonable value so I did not think this would be an issue. But, with 2 of the 3 being the most expensive, this is very suspicious...

I have been taking photos of my subs all since September of this year...

... Good times ...

My very first sub of 10 books... I was fortunate enough to get one of these special slabs.... They repaired it right away, and even made my page tear look better when they re-slabbed it by placing the white part behind the other portion... they did the right thing for me, but it was certainly confusing and frustrating to me as a first-time submitter.

image.png.108ed32f2584626231b734539ed639f7.png

FWIW, that tear still garnered a 9.6 after the ME and second review, so I am shocked about that one. I know I can't sell it for the price of a 9.6, so it'll prob stay in my PC as a reminder (I can still recall the day when I was 12 years old, I just brought that comic home, sitting on my bed, and when I opened the page to read it, it tore!!! yikes...)

Regarding the hologram covering the custom label for the McFarlane SS books:

CGC got on this immediately. We have requested new labels be printed and rushed. We are hoping to have labels within a week, although Thanksgiving may affect this. All in-house books that have not been sent out are being held for the new labels. If a customer already received a book with the hologram covering the label, the best course of action is to reach out to the Sig Team and they will happily send Mechanical Error instructions so this can be fixed. Signatureseries@cgccomics.com

This issue is only happening on the McFarlane scroll label, the Spawn label is good to go.
