Even as Paramount and Hasbro’s filmed entertainment studio, eOne, are in the casting stages of a live-action Dungeons & Dragons feature film, Habsro/eOne is also laying the groundwork for a television series based on the fantasy role playing game.

Derek Kolstad, the creator and writer behind the John Wick franchise, has been tapped to pen and develop a pitch for a live-action series based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

Affectionately referred to by fans as D&D, the game is known for its wars, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie, and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other creatures. The game famously uses multisided dice in gameplay to further the imaginary story and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master.

Launched in 1974, it was popularized in the 1980s. Its popularity has returned in recent years and, in fact, has soared anew during the pandemic, and found new fans thanks to videogame play and livestreams on Twitch and YouTube. In an earning call in October, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner said sales had mushroomed 20 percent from 2019. Goldner also revealed that a series was being eyed.

Paramount and eOne are mounting a feature that will star Chris Pine that is due to lens later this year.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind New Line's sleeper hit 'Game Night' — are set to direct the feature based on the popular fantasy role-playing game.

Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith have joined Chris Pine in Paramount and eOne's big-budget Dungeons & Dragons feature adaptation.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind New Line's sleeper hit Game Night — are set to direct the feature based on the popular fantasy role-playing game. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the latest version of the -script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

Rodriguez, best known for her long-standing work in the Fast & Furious movies, and Smith, who starred in Pokemon Detective Pikachu, have closed deals and will be part of the wizarding campaign that Paramount and eOne are mounting.

Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are jointly producing and financing, with eOne distributing in the U.K. and Canada, and Paramount distributing rest of world.

Jeremy Latcham is producing via his deal with eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner is also producing.

The game is known for its war games, treasure hunts, camaraderie and reversals of fortune, all in a fantasy setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other creatures. The game famously uses multi-sided dice in gameplay and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master. It is not known whether the story is a straight up fantasy or incorporates  the storytelling and game-playing aspects.

Rodriguez has the latest Fast movie, F9, in the can for May 28, 2021 release, although the movie has shifted numerous times and may so again. The actress, who also appeared in Steve McQueen’s Widows, is repped by David Markman and DLA Piper.

Hugh Grant will appear in next year's Dungeons & Dragons movie as the main villain. Deadline reports that the charismatic British actor and star of HBO's The Undoing and Paddington 2 will appear in Paramount and eOne's Dungeons & Dragons movie alongside It and It: Chapter Two star Sophia Lillis. Details about Grant and Lillis's roles were not fully disclosed, although Deadline reports that Grant will play the movie's villain. The pair join a star-studded cast that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Detective Pikachu star Justice Smith, and Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page. Hypothetically, Pine, Rodriguez, Smith, Page, and Lillis could play the roles of a traditional D&D adventuring party, which consists of 4-5 adventurers.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to direct the new Dungeons & Dragons film, which is based on the hit tabletop roleplaying game. Details about the film are scarce, although an earlier -script indicated that the movie would involve a group of adventurers seeking out the dreaded Eye of Vecna, a famed artifact in D&D lore.

Dungeons & Dragons has existed for over 40 years and has had a resurgence in popularity thanks to its easy to understand Fifth Edition rules and numerous tie-ins with pop culture properties like Stranger Things. The game, which was one of the first big tabletop roleplaying games and helped to define that genre, experienced its strongest year in 2020. The game conveniently also has a deep well of untapped IP consisting of well-developed lore and characters from multiple worlds. These characters have starred in novels and other tie-in games, but exist as secondary characters in the world and stories of the games played in the table. Hasbro is working on multiple D&D projects, including a live-action TV show being developed by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad.

Several animated projects featuring completed D&D campaigns, such as those seen on Critical Role and The Adventure Zone, are also in the work.

The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons live action television show "might be" focused on the iconic drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden.

Earlier today, Wizards of the Coast announced a summer-long celebration of Drizzt Do'Urden, the iconic drow ranger made famous in a series of best-selling fantasy novels by R.A. Salvatore. A press release for the celebration mentioned the numerous pieces of merchandise and tie-ins, including "action figures, Magic: The Gathering cards, Funko POP figures, Halloween costumes, t-shirts, replica scimitars and more." The press release then noted that "a live action TV show is in development with eOne entertainment and, although not focused on Drizzt, a movie set in the Forgotten Realms starring Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Rege-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, and Justice Smith is in production."

When ComicBook.com reached out for clarification, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie was "not focused on Drizzt, but there is a TV show in development that might be."

The television show could be the same Dungeons & Dragons project that John Wick creator Derek Kolstad is working on. Earlier this year, Kolstad hinted that his upcoming D&D TV show would be set in the Underdark, a massive series of caverns that spreads over entire continents. Most drow (also known as dark elves) live in the Underdark, so the show could focus on Drizzt's early life growing up in the drow city of Menzoberranzan, also known as the city of Spiders.

Drizzt Do'Urden is a heroic ranger accompanied by the magic panther Guenhwyvar. The character first appeared as a side character in The Crystal Shard trilogy of novels written by Salvatore but quickly became the focus of Salvatore's long-running series of novels set in the Forgotten Realms. In the books and other media, Drizzt is an outcast of sorts from drow society, which traditionally worships the evil spider goddess Lolth. Drizzt rejected the ways of Lolth and eventually became the hero of the frozen tundra of Icewind Dale, forming a found family with the characters Bruenor Battlehammer, Wulfgar and Cattie-brie.

Photos taken on the Dungeons & Dragons movie set reveal the first look at Hugh Grant's costume. Originally a fantasy tabletop role-playing game, the popular IP has been adapted into various films and television shows to very little success. The most notorious flop of them all, the 2000 feature film adaptation starring Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans, has been derided for its cheap aesthetics, poor direction, and bad performances.

After a lengthy legal battle over rights, the upcoming D&D adaptation landed at Paramount and Entertainment One, who look to correct course for the franchise. In 2019, Game Night’s Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were hired to direct the film and write a new draft of the -script that David Leslie Johnson had previously worked on. The film made a significant splash when it cast Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as its two leads, followed by Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page, It’s Sophia Lillis, and Jurassic World’s Justice Smith in supporting roles. However, one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most intriguing casting decisions was Hugh Grant as the main villain, Forge Fletcher.

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount+ has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order to an adaptation of Hasbro’s wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise. Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote the pilot -script and is set to direct the first episode of the series which will be a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures.

eOne, the lead studio, took the project out in November, garnering interest from multiple buyers, with Paramount+ ultimately landing the show in a competitive situation. eOne and Paramount Pictures are partnering on the Dungeons & Dragons series after also co-producing and co-financing the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie directed by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley, which premieres March 31.
