THE PUNISHER on Netflix
4 4

420 posts in this topic

Likely won't be announced until Marvel/Netflix re-up their deal. Remember, it's not an open ended deal. It's 60-episodes of content. They elected to break that up into 13x4 (DD, JJ, LC & IF) plus 8 for defenders

If it's only 60-episodes of content where does Daredevil Season 2 fit in?

Marvel & Netflix Confirm Deal For 4 TV Shows & Defenders Miniseries

The original deal Marvel offered to a few network - and which Netflix jumped on - was four TV shows, with up to 60 episodes total. They added a made-for-streaming movie, which would be the Defenders.

It would appear from the Daredevil results Netflix and Disney/Marvel made the jump to expand the scope from the original deal.

Yeah. It's unknown how the 2nd season of Daredevil (or the announced 2nd season of Jessica Jones) fits into this contract. They may have expanded it. They may be working on a separate contracts for the additional "seasons" of these shows. Or they may have just worked out a "per hour" rate for however many episodes Marvel delivers for Netflix beyond those initial 60. We don't know & can only speculate.

However, I think it's safe to assume that prior to new series being officially added, the existing contract is somehow re-worked or extended or something. It may not even happen until after Luke Cage comes out in order to see if Marvel keeps their batting average at 1.000 (at least, as far as Netflix defines it) after 3 series. I don't know. But I can speculate that they'll avoid adding additional series beyond the 4 or 5 (if you count the combo-Defenders as a separate series or not) that were initially planned until they figure out a new contract approach. But that's just a guess.

Isn't the 2nd JJ season announced officially now? hm

I bet that is a very good guess on your part.

Daredevil must have been eye-opening for Netflix how hot these properties can get if handled correctly.

Bernthal Talks About Honoring THE PUNISHER In 'DAREDEVIL: SEASON 2'

In a chat with Comic Book Resources, Bernthal waxed poetic about the significance of the role, and whether or not he wants to don the iconic skull symbol: "You know what man, I hope you don't take this as being political, but every step along with way with this, I feel such an enormous -- I'm extremely humbled to have this job. It's an extraordinary honor for me. I take it as a responsibility the same way I would representing any soldier. This is a character that resonates deeply in the military and law enforcement. People have gone into war for this country with the Punisher logo attached to their armor, attached to their uniforms. That's something that just really resonates with me and it goes right into my heart.

So as to those decisions, I divorced myself from all wanting this. My only want is to do the best job we possibly can to honor the character and to do it justice, and to pull no punches."

Long interview. But you can tell immediately how fired up he is over this role.

The Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd Can't Imagine A Better Punisher Than Jon Bernthal

Over the weekend, ComicBook.com had the chance to speak with one of the few folks who have been with The Walking Dead since it first started back in 2010: executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. Hurd was around for Bernthal's Shane Walsh days and she's quite eager to see him take on the role of Frank Castle.

"I can't imagine a better Frank Castle, to bring the Punisher to life on Netflix," Hurd says. "I just can't. I saw Jon while he was shooting last year, and he's an incredibly committed actor. He's able to find the sort of darkness that Frank Castle needs. Depending on who was drawing Frank Castle at the time, he also can look very much like some of the Frank Castles. I love the Garth Ennis version and I haven't read the -script so I'm not quite sure where they're going, but I know in terms of that dark, grounded and gritty Frank Castle that no one is better."

I posted this in the other Daredevil thread but I'll mention it here too.

The depiction of Frank/Punisher in this season, it had occurred to me after seeing him several times, is just a variation on Robert DiNiro's character Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. In researching it apparently I wasn't wrong, there's several articles with the quotes from the producer confirming my suspensions that the character was based very much on Bickle.

It's not that I hated it (Bernthal as Punisher), but it did feel like a rip off/copy cat and basically something I've already seen. I think something new and unique would have been better.

They should pass on a Punisher show for now and just have him show up from time to time in the other Netflix/Marvel collaborations. (shrug)

I think a show would only work for one season, as it runs the risk of being about Frank constantly killing people. That will run its course over time, and potentially detract from the excitement of the new portrayal.

Better they do make him a spot appearance character over a few episodes. Viewers would then stay excited. Especially knowing Frank Castle is always watching behind the scenes for the right moment to pop up for the right villain.

Maybe an aspect is like Bickle, but if you remember the end of the killing spree in Taxi Driver, Bickle was entirely unhinged. Castle is tactical, controlled, and never detached from reality.

Also BIckle's motivations are drastically different than The Punisher's. It's in those motivations, and exposition by the character, that the full form of the character is revealed.

Other than killing people, being ex-military and wanting to clear the scum off the streets, there's not much the same between Bickle and Castle. Their motivations are drastically different. Bickle is rejected by a woman and begins to plot to kill the Senate candidate she works for, for fame or attention....that's a world away from Castle.

He fixates on a 12 prostitute and kills everyone around here, almost in a trance at the time.

To me, characters are their motivations...what pushes them to act. These characters are so radically different in that respect it's hard to see that they are more alike than they are different.

Really, he's a hell of a lot more like Kersey in Death Wish, in terms of motivation, than Bickle.

Yea he doesn't remind me of Bickle at all in personality. Bickle wouldn't have been offended by that pawn shop owner mentioning the kiddie porn, but obviously Frank Castle was. Bickle was insane, Castle isn't. I'm guessing that the comparison is mostly coming from their appearance which is vaguely similar early in the show, particularly the jacket.

For me, I noticed it because of their similar looks and mannerisms. It struck me like Bernthal watched Taxi Driver a dozen times before filming. Obviously the characters are quite different in background story and what not, but I thought I saw something when I was watching DD. That lead me to google it and the producer was quoted as saying there was indeed a heavy influence.

Ramirez adds the team talked a lot about Taxi Driver’s famous malcontent Travis Bickle when shaping their version of the character. “He has a different moral code,” he says. “Matt is a devout Catholic — and you rarely see a character who’s a devotee anything on TV. Frank has Hammurabi’s Code. It’s like letting a great white shark into the water.”

The showrunner added that they were going to use Punisher's reliance on gun violence, however, to try and get the characters in the show and the people watching to question the ethics surrounding every one of Punisher's decisions.

Most interesting, however, is that this version of Punisher has been modeled after Robert De Niro's famous character from Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle.

The showrunners admitted that they saw quite a few similarities between the two characters, but were worried about messing up one of the most beloved comic book icons. Even Bernthal admitted that he's had people walk up to him and warn him not to mess anything up.

Ah. The look. That I agree with. This is a far less "pretty" far more gritty looking Punisher.

I also enjoyed that he carried far more moral ambiguity than in the films. They made it far gpharder to root for him in this series than in his films where it was entirely one sided in favor of him.

This is my favorite Punisher usage in any marvel property yet.

Just finished Season 2 of DD. I really can't see Marvel/Netflix (or just Marvel alone if Netflix can't afford it) NOT extending this version of the Punisher in either his own series or stand alone movie. This version of the character could very well likely become the money maker that the first three movies tried to be.

I could see a low-budget Netflix-distributed Punisher movie happening. Or a mini-series. Or even a 1 season series. I also halfway expect to see him in Defenders at this point along with Hellcat, Elektra, Fisk, Luke Cage, whatever other supporting characters he brings along, Stick, Iron Fist and some of the Hand/K'un Lun villains in a bit of a street war.

Funny, because if you want to talk mannerisms... I was constantly reminded of Jake the MUSS in "Once Were Warriors." Walk, head ticks, insanity, brutishness, spot on... much more so than taxi.

Great Brutal and realistic movie if you haven't yet seen it.

some of you also may remember him as Boba Fett.
