Amazing Spider-Man #544 - two different covers but only one slot for it?

Hello Gemma,

 

Amazing Spiderman #544 has two different covers, but there is only one slot in the set? Customer service claims a slot cannot be added as it would change the census? Any chance a slot can be added for the alternative cover ( even if it was flagged non competitive)? For those of us who collect the variants, this would be nice to fix!

There are many issues that have many (variant) regular covers, and even many 'official' variant covers. Uncanny X-Men #500 is one example, also for many issues of Amazing Spider-Man.

Hi David!

 

The situation with Amazing Spider-Man #544 (as well as the other three comics in the "One More Day" storyline), is that it has 2 different covers, but neither one was billed by Marvel as either a "regular cover" or a "variant cover".

 

Indeed, they were published (according to Marvel) in an even 50-50 split, and also with the same UPC coding.

 

If the ratio were different, for instance 1:4, or 1:20, then by our (and many other people's) standards, the rarer one would be the variant. Or, if one was UPC coded 54411 and the other was coded 54421, then *that* would distinguish them as the regular and variant cover, respectively.

 

So in situations like this, (same ratio, same UPC code, no word from the publisher on what is or isn't a variant), CGC treats it as 2 regular covers, instead of 1 regular and 1 variant.
