So good. Now I sit back and wait for the inevitable re-edit of the trailer to be posted - in which someone puts the original movies soundtrack overtop of this footage (as it was meant to be experienced - we need more screaming MORTAL KOMBAT)

The trailer opens with Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks) investigating a building with an interior bizarrely coated in ice, but any Mortal Kombat fan knows that means Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) is nearby.

“This is really the first time [Jax has] encountered Sub-Zero,” McQuoid said of the scene. “So he's starting to learn stuff about what this character and this creature can do.”

Jax gets introduced to the blue-clad ninja in a way he will never forget, as Sub-Zero uses his ice powers to effortlessly, impossibly stop a shotgun blast fired in his face at point-blank range. McQuoid emphasized how it was important to introduce the revered and well-known fighters of Mortal Kombat in a way that left a strong impression of their character while also demonstrating their unique abilities.

“[Sub-Zero] has no problem freezing the gun, he's in total control,” McQuoid said. “This was a whole setup to educate what Sub-Zero is doing here and show he, literally in the face of danger, has no problem.”

And then comes the first of many violent delights in the trailer: Sub-Zero sends a surge of ice down Jax’s arms, causing them to instantly freeze and shatter. Again, Mortal Kombat diehards know that something bad will usually happen to Jax’s arms--in one take on his origin they are damaged beyond repair by Prince Goro, while in another Ermac uses telekinesis to rip them clean off--all so he can wind up with his signature robotic arms, as seen later in the trailer.

“In this film we needed to drive a few certain characters and narratives, and so given that [Jax losing his arms] had been done a couple of different ways in the past, we felt we had a bit of license to do that again here,” McQuoid said. “We've really tried to be very truthful and true to the canon where we can be, but every now and again, we might deviate slightly where we felt that it was okay to do so.”

Sub-Zero is a character with a lot of history in Mortal Kombat lore. The mantle has been held by two different brothers, each with their own agenda and moral alignment. McQuoid says the movie version is inspired by the original Sub-Zero named Bi-Han, and given how we watched him maim a hero in merciless fashion, it won’t surprise you to hear he’s a bad guy. In fact, McQuoid described Sub-Zero as the key villain of the film.

Everything director Simon McQuoid said in the above interview/video hits exactly right for me and gives me a good feeling about how he handled this movie.

The only thing outstanding we really need to find out is the soundtrack, and that is a big factor to the impact of the original movie. They could keep that theme going, as there are LOTS of modern artists who've been making music inspired by that movie (Heck, Skrillex loves MK so much I would be very happy hearing a snippet of his song "Reptile" in this movie during a fight and it would fit perfectly)

That is such a cool video having the director talking us through his thoughts and influences throughout. You can tell they want to provide the right level of care how these characters are portrayed.

So, with so many people online complaining that Johnny Cage isn't in this movie (which I'm fine with - plenty of characters are not in this movie) I would like to submit what I feel SHOULD be how the character gets introduced in this movie (either at the end of the movie or start of the sequel)

Johnny Cage for the movie should be based on Frank Dux AS WE KNOW HIM TODAY. Dux was the martial artists who claimed to have won the secret underground kumite, which was made into the movie Bloodsport. In that amazing movie Frank was played by Jean-Claude Van Damme - a role that served as the inspiration for Johnny Cage. Dux's legend grew over the years, but more and more it became obvious he was a lying fraudster. At this point every last one of his claims has been discredited, and that is the perspective they should take with Johnny Cage in the films.

Have Cage be an actor/fighter who finds out about the MK tournament (or at least hears about the general idea and figured a secret tournament sounds like a cool idea - maybe he just thinks it was some ideas from a -script floating around), and he starts telling everyone that HE WON THE MK TOURNAMENT. He uses that story to get more fame, movies and publicity and even start his own franchise of dojos (like Frank Dux did lying about his history and events of Bloodsport) . Full on Frank Dux...however in this case after years of telling this story for his own gain he gets roped into the next very REAL tournament, and only then he realizes that it was a real thing that he cannot escape due to his lies (none of the original combatants came forward to disprove Cage, as it would just sound crazy and he was just a washed up actor anyways).

Needs Better music.

The techno music in first movies were just as important

Play the trailer at x2 speed on youtube and watch the last bit of the trailer - the soundtrack corrects itself back to the tempo of the original theme (they know they cannot deny fans that song)

Mortal Kombat might be hiding the true identity of Cole Young from audiences, but who could he really be? The reboot of the Mortal Kombat film series hits theaters and HBO Max on April 16th (as part of the split streaming/theatrical model for Warner Bros. 2021 slate). Anticipation for the reboot, which was already high, is now booming after the trailer offered viewers their first real glimpse at what it has in store.

The trailer positions Mortal Kombat as the R-rated, off-the-chain tournament of pure martial arts carnage that fans of the games have waited decades for - full of the unique blend of supernatural abilities and horrific fatalities that are the staple of the franchise. The trailer also centers Lewis Tan's MMA fighter Cole Young as the central protagonist of the reboot, with a dragon tattoo foreshadowing his connection to the tournament. Though the reboot is hardly short of characters from the games, Cole himself is no MK alumni. Or is he?

It could be that Mortal Kombat has presented Cole as a new addition to the franchise's canon, while secretly setting him up as one of its most popular characters. With a genuine rising star like Lewis Tan playing the protagonist, along the with promise of non-stop gore and fatalities, Mortal Kombat could have one more trick up its sleeve with the revelation that Cole Young has actually been a character that's appeared in the games many times over. Here are the possible candidates for who Cole Young could be in Mortal Kombat.

Last Thursday, Warner Bros. Pictures finally released the red band trailer for its upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot.

Anticipation has been quite high for the movie, and it seems that resulted in a record number of watchers: the trailer is now the most viewed red band trailer of all-time! The official Mortal Kombat film's Twitter account announced the accomplishment alongside an all-new video showing fans reacting to the events in the trailer. With the film set to release in theaters and on HBO Max in just over a month, it seems that excitement around the film will only continue to build!

Many are hungry for this film to be intense.

One has to remember is this is the first time the marketing for a movie has shifted to suite the pandemic. Previously all trailers (multiple versions) would be released at least a year in advance in order to play in front of movies at theatres. Since nobody is going to theatres now there is zero reason to invest money in marketing a trailer so far in advance when people will forget about it (and they would just have to release a trailer closer to the opening date anyways to hype people up again. So lots of cost editing and coordinating the submissions for many trailers).

This release schedule was was much better, leave it until months before the release, getting people frothing with anticipation (many thinking it would be bad as they couldn't understand WHY a trailer for a movie would be held back). Now we have this trailer fresh in mind just a month before release, which also allows the footage from it to enter the meme cycle and propagate (also with enough time without risking it all being forgotten by the time the movie is released).
