From the article I posted on 12/27, Ryan Reynolds shared on a talk show yes - he is working with the MCU now on early production work.

Now how long this takes will be interesting.

Deadpool 3 is gonna suck if it's PG-13 in the MCU.

Colossus is already in that franchise, too, with X-Men references. Wtf?

This.

I was so very happy to see a CG Juggernaut, but it was the completely wrong movie for him.

A stand-alone Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and existing as a 20th Century-produced blockbuster, is more valuable to Disney than Wade Wilson’s theoretical inclusion in a future MCU movie.

Today was supposed to be the “two months-out” date for Free Guy, which was scheduled to open domestically on July 3. The film, starring Ryan Reynolds as a random video game non-playable-character who becomes sentient, will now (hopefully) open on December 11. It was to be one of the big original flicks of the summer. Since the print media tends to plan far in advance, the Total Film cover story already dropped. In it, Reynolds discusses that he has little idea when, if or how Deadpool 3 will happen. Some of the mystery is related to how Kevin Feige plans to include X-Men-related mutants into the MCU, and how Deadpool might fit in. At this point, Disney might want to just make a non-MCU Deadpool sequel. Marvel doesn’t need the character, but Disney could really use a hit from their Fox IP.

While Tim Miller’s $58 million-budgeted Deadpool was technically a spin-off from the Fox X-Men franchise, with Reynolds reprising the role he first played in X-Men Origins: Wolverine seven years earlier, the film proved more popular than any X-Men movie. Heck, the film earned $363 million domestic (from a $132 million Fri-Sun/$152 million Fri-Mon President’s Day launch) and $783 million worldwide, becoming (at the time) the biggest R-rated movie ever worldwide. It passed the cumes of Guardians of the Galaxy ($333 million domestic and $773 million worldwide), meaning it had earned, at the time, more than any non-Tony Stark MCU movie ever. With decent reviews and a strong hook as a vulgar, blood-soaked, R-rated romcom superhero lark (with 99% of its violence directed at the bad guys), the film was a singular sensation beyond just being an X-Men flick or being a Marvel Comics adaptation.

Yes, there is the issue of both Deadpool movies being R-rated carnage-fests, but that’s less of an issue as it’s not like they didn’t release Fox Searchlight’s R-rated Ready Or Not to relative success ($58 million worldwide on a $6 million budget). An R-rated Deadpool 3, disconnected to any continuity save for Deadpool and Deadpool 2, released by 20th Century Pictures would be entirely sans controversy or complication. No, the real complication is related to whether a Deadpool 3 would take place within the MCU, since that inclusion would bring about questions in terms of MPAA ratings, fourth-wall-breaking and related elements that make Deadpool unique in terms of current superhero franchises. However, Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe is doing just fine without the X-Men. Moreover, Disney could really use a theatrical success with a Fox-specific IP right now.

However, looking at the various IP and brands that Disney just purchased, the only ones that arguably have any theatrical value are Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot flicks (Death on the Nile is still slated for October 9, 2020), James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, Planet of the Apes (a new sequel/installment for which is in development) and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool franchise. The Deadpool series, specifically the version of Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds in the first two movies, is as valuable by itself as any MCU franchise. Besides, it’s not like Deadpool 3 would prohibit future Wade Wilson appearances in later MCU movies. Speaking specifically in terms of theatrical releases (as opposed to Disney+ and Hulu streaming), Deadpool 3’s existence as a stand-alone tentpole movie is more valuable to Disney, in terms of representing a Fox-specific blockbuster, than Deadpool appearing as another cog in the MCU.

EXCLUSIVE: As Disney continues to figure out what to do with Fox properties they acquired in the merger, one of the biggest IPs, Deadpool, looks to be gaining momentum. Sources tell Deadline that Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin to write Deadpool 3 with Reynolds set to reprise his role as wise-cracking superhero.

Writer meetings have been taking place over the past month with Reynolds recently meeting with a handful of writers to hear their pitch for the next installment. In the end, the studio and Reynolds saw the sisters take as the perfect fit for what they wanted. The film is still in early development but the hiring of the Molyneux sisters does mark the first major step in getting the next Deadpool film into production.

This marks the first Deadpool film where Marvel studios will work hand and hand with Reynolds and team Deadpool. Fans are sure to be excited at Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige’s involvement after seeing how he helped revamp the Spider-Man franchise after coming on to help in the creative effort of that franchise.

Besides Reynolds return, there is so many factors being worked but sources say the film is still expected to be rated R like the previous two installments. It is also expected to have a new director David Leitch, who helmed the second pic, has a schedule filled through 2021. Insiders the door is open for Leitch’s return as its unknown when this film will go into production but given that he wasn’t part of the writer search, seems unlikely for him to come back for part 3.

Either way, the film pushing forward will surely excite fan as many across the world and industry did wonder this film’s fate following the Fox/Disney Merger that some felt meant the possible end of the franchise.

As for the Molyneuxs, they are sisters and writing partners, who serve as the creators, showrunners, and executive producers of the new Fox series The Great North, which is set to premiere in February 2021, and has already been renewed for a second season.  In addition, Lizzie and Wendy are writers and executive producers of the long-running hit series Bob’s Burgers on Fox, for which they won an Emmy Award in 2017, and have been nominated for an Emmy for eight consecutive years.  They have also been nominated for three WGA Awards, and won the Annie Award in 2017 for their episode, The Hormone-iums.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe may not have had a big year in 2020, but it hopes to make up for the slip moving forward. With 2021 shaping up to be much better for the franchise, all eyes are to the future of its top heroes. This includes Deadpool now that Disney has earned rights to the mouthy mercenary, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has confirmed the hero's next movie will be rated R.

This latest update came from Collider as Feige did interviews ahead of the Disney+ premiere of WandaVision. It was there the producer opened up about Deadpool 3, and he confirmed star Ryan Reynolds is helping oversee the -script.

"It will be rated R and we are working on a -script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a -script right now," Feige shared.

Continuing, the producer gave fans an update on when the sequel will begin shooting. Feige doesn't believe the movie will get underway this year, but Reynolds and he wants to make sure they get Deadpool's entry into the MCU just right. And if that means focusing on other projects in the meantime - well, Marvel Studios has plenty of stuff to work on.

"It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life."

Ryan Reynolds says that prior to Disney buying Fox, Deadpool 3 would have seen Wade Wilson and Wolverine go on a road trip. After the first two Deadpool solo films proved to be critically-acclaimed box office successes, the franchise seemed poised to continue with a bright future. However, Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox (which became official in 2019) threw a monkey wrench in any plans, raising questions about what would become of the property. It's since been revealed Deadpool 3 will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it isn't expected to begin filming until 2022 at the earliest.

It'll be interesting to see how Deadpool is integrated into the MCU (and if there are any fun crossovers), but it's also hard not to wonder how Deadpool 3 would have turned out if Disney hadn't bought Fox and the series remained a separate entity. Viewers probably have their own ideas on how the movie might have looked, and Reynolds himself has a pretty compelling pitch.

On Twitter, Reynolds tweeted in support of #BellLetsTalk to help raise mental health awareness. In his post, he shared what the plot of Deadpool 3 would have been if the Disney/Fox deal never happened. Take a look at it in the space below:

He then followed up to confirm this was real.
