Actually, the answer is "settle down Marwood because I've been away for three days." :roflmao:

Update on these things - since April 1 there have been three $2.49 variants for sale on eBay, X-Men 96 and Cable 73 and 74. All three were from the same seller in Pensacola, Florida. Continual searching every night.

Mile High Comics has $2.49 variants on their site but does not show any $2.29s. My thought, just based on these searches, is that the $2.29s are exponentially harder to find than the $2.49s - much like the 30/35 cent variant splits from 1976 and 1977. Other thoughts, again just based on all these searches, is that the easiest to find is the $2.49 variant for Fantastic Four 23 and 24.

Interesting, thanks. Based on my last chart showing 26 confirmed variants...

...you're saying you've found a further 2 $2.49 priced books:

- Cable 74

- Cable 75

Can I see pictures please? And are you sure about Cable #75? As a double sized $2.99 regular priced issue a $2.49 will be very odd hm

That's great. Really great. And 76 means a second February book. Excellent stuff. Can you post the 76 too?  I'll update the chart at the weekend.

No - sorry. The 76 was a newsstand, but not a $2.49.

A bit of observation - the X-Men 97 newsstand pops up often, but never a variant.

Oh, right, I see the correction to your post. Shame - back to only one Feb book!

So we're on 27 confirmed books. Considering how long I looked (years, albeit from England) and how long you've been on the case it really shows how rare these are. Maybe X-Men 97 doesn't show because it doesn't exist...? hm

You may need to update your searches a bit.  I only follow the price variants for X-Men #93, 95, 96, and 97 and Hulk #8.  There have been a number of copies available on eBay beyond what you've reported thus far.  I know because usually I'm the one who snaps them up.

I finished up my Hulk #8 set with a $2.29 price variant last month in the auction linked below.  I'd say it's about a 9.4, so I'm pretty happy with that.  Seller was from New York, NY 10044.

I picked up the following X-Men #95 $2.29 variant on June 27th from a seller in Benton, IL 62812.

There has not been a variant for sale on eBay since February 9.

Going back a little farther, and noting your post from March 15th quoted above... I purchased my Hulk #8 $2.49 price variant from seller in Fitzwilliam, NH 03447 on February 26th.  The auction link is no longer valid, so here's a scan of the book.  I put this at a solid 9.6, so I'm really happy with this one.

I also picked up an X-Men #96 $2.29 from a seller in Arvada, CO 80004 on March 31st (which falls outside your reporting dates that you've been posting about).  I don't have a scan of that one handy, though.  It came to me in VF condition.

Lastly, there was an X-Men #96 (I think it was this issue) price variant listed for auction about 2 or 3 months ago.  I was tracking it, but after 3 days, the seller ended the auction early with a "this item is no longer available" message.  I'm sure someone jumped in and offered to make a deal outside of the auction listing :pullhair:.  That was an issue I needed at the time, so I'm thinking it was the $2.49 variant which I'm still trying to hunt down.  (Maybe it was even the #96 you referenced above?)

I'm not trying to be nitpicky, and I'm definitely not trying to pick a fight or anything.  I just wanted to add some additional reporting of more of these issues that have come to market.  They're still rare, but only about half as rare as we've seen posted thus far (and remember, I only track a handful of these books).  If anyone else has found more, I encourage you to share here as well.  @FlyingDonut has done an exceptional job trying to track these down, but I'm really hoping to get more data points. :foryou:

I'm in this boat.  I've been looking for a copy for a #97 for quite some time, but nothing has popped up.  I've seen lots of newsstand editions, and I have even picked up regularly priced newsstand editions in the same lot as newsstand price variants of #95 (I would have expected both to be regularly priced or both to be price variations).  All this leads me to the idea that #97 doesn't exist (but I'd love to be proven wrong and get my hands on some copies).

Happy to have more data points! How are you searching to find them?

and yes, the 96 is now in my house. That was from Pensacola, Florida.

Just doing a basic search...

Hulk 8
X-Men 93 -1993
X-Men 95
X-Men 96
X-Men 97

Then I just look through the new listings and see what we have.  For X-Men 93, there was a seller who was listing the year 1993 on each of his auctions, so I was getting thousands of results... now I filter out that year.

Great stuff there @masterlogan2000 - you've done very well as eBay can be really temperamental. I used to search not only the 'basics' (e.g. Hulk 8) but every permutation going (Hulk lot, Hulk newsstand, Hulk 2.49, Hulk 1999, Hulk 2000 etc etc). I had a lot of luck searching sold copies, but found that sometimes eBay doesn't always give you the full results. It may be because I'm in the UK searching eBay.com and maybe you guys get different results to me.

What used to annoy me is I would search for, say "Hulk newsstand" in comics and get less results than if I searched for 'all categories'. The amount of people who list in the wrong category is staggering. Still, excellent work and analysis there  :golfclap:

Here's the updated list of what is confirmed to exist - 27 books in total.

We still have:

  • Only one Feb 2000 book
  • No variants where the issue is double sized
  • No title with more than 3 of the same priced variant
  • More 2.49's (16) than 2.29's (11)
  • Only six titles with a variant from the scores of available potential titles
  • No title has variant issues covering all 5 months (FF has the only Feb 2000 but no Oct 1999)

Additionally, if we assume that no title extends over 5 months by design, and that there are definitely no double sized variants:

  • We have a 'full set' of ASM and X-Men

Keep looking :headbang:

Ha! Yes, I have. I actually stopped looking a while back and passed the reins to FD and Masterlogan. The eyes are creaking a bit too lately - too many years staring at eBay listings I fear (amongst other things )

I think he's talking about the regular priced books that have white boxes. I can't tell you the number of $1.99 Thor 19s I've looked at, for example. All the $1.99s exist.

Yep, I know. I stopped looking for them too. Easy enough to find, but I have too many things to look for lately so something had to give! Be great if you have scans to post them here, otherwise it's on my retirement to do list.

Always happens doesn't it. You put aside an avenue of research to concentrate on other things, someone then shows interest in it and your own interest is reanimated!

So I spent a little while filling in a few of the missing $1.99 regular priced newsstands this morning, and I tinkered with the summary chart a bit.

Here's the latest version:

1.9.thumb.PNG.55150d722b0e76f404805118a1156a17.PNG

Every book colour coded green means I have a copy / image saved in here:

1_92.PNG.9d00a0c6c1d831ea18918708d7f32ef8.PNG

If anyone has a scan / image of the following issues please post them:

  • Cable #72 $1.99 newsstand
  • Cable #73 $1.99 newsstand
  • Hulk #11 $1.99 newsstand
  • Thor #17 $1.99 newsstand

Once those 4 issues are recorded we'll have confirmation that a 'regular' $1.99 ($2.99 for double sized) newsstand copy exists for each title in scope for the proposed 5 month variant date range as expected.

That will leave us on the hunt for more $2.29 / $2.49 variants. We may find more for the existing 5 titles, or even better we may find a copy for a new title. But as it stands, the 27 variant book figure, spread across five months / six titles appears not to want to budge.

I may have to start looking again :insane:

On the summary you'll see a column under each book titled 'Indicia Price US / Can'. This is where I'm recording any variations on indicia prices. To add to the intrigue, some of the variant priced books reflect the variant cover price, like so:

1896198186_FantasticFour24Indicia-2_49.thumb.PNG.d9ff8d027720282553515bef23b9eb3b.PNG

...and some don't:

1403211944_AmazingSpider-Man13Indicia-2_49.thumb.PNG.9b7c0797e550cddd4b848676a2f154ce.PNG

It would be nice to complete a full picture of indicia content, and I'll look to start more fully populating that part of the chart at a later time. It can only help inform why these books exist.
