It might be my eyes, but is that tippex obscuring the UK price and (what looked to be) inked writing in the date box?

Interesting.  I had to Google "tippex" -- not used this side of the pond!   But still, whatever the motivation for its use, it's a nice-looking book.  While it's a shame that what should be the proud tell-tale indicators of a rare UKPV were muted, it's another UKPV doing well of late.

Surprised it didn't get done for colour touch, quite pleased though as my GS X-men #1 has a tiny bit of tippex on it

This looks to my tired old cynical eyes as if someone has tried to obscure the fact that it is a UK variant. Perhaps in an attempt to deceive others that it is an US issue? Presumably the indicia thwarted this attempted subterfuge? This seems to be an instance where CGC got it right.

They didn't have enough tippex for the indicia Stephen

I think it didn't get called out as a 'color touch' because maybe it's a scrape rather than tippex. It looks to me a little like someone went at it very gently with a razor blade or something.

Interesting that it didn't fool CGC into thinking it was a cents copy.

Maybe a previous owner inked a cover month, and changed the price, and the owner scratched them off thinking that would improve desirability. People do odd things, after all.

23 down, 2 to go for the full run of pre-hero Strange Tales UKPVs.

Anyone else here think that Kirby did not do all the work on the lead story in Strange Tales 86?

Cover and splash page definitely Jack's handiwork, but some of the interior panels are not as Kirbyesque as his usual output of the time.

Kirby layouts, Ayers pencilling?

But Ayers usually drew slim figures.

The straw-haired nipper on the scan has me puzzled, not a Kirby face, surely.

Someone here must know the answer.

Some of it is pure Kirby, like this.......

...........but what about these.........??

I think I can detect the style of Jack Davis, who was busy around the same time with Atlas Westerns, if my memory serves me well.

Certainly some off panels there. Office re-draws or inking decisions could be at play. I still don’t see another hand’s major influence; but I am no expert, and could easily be wrong. There are people in the OA forum that would be more authoritative.

Possible resemblance to Boy Commandos and Newsboy Legion, but surely not Jack's style from the early 60s.

+1 Good eye! (thumbsu

Agree with this 100%

Several of those characters resembles the GA Kirby style

(thanks to the GCD for lending me these)

He had such a prolific output for four decades across every genre, there's bound to be similar character traits that are "re-used". I can probably find a dozen examples of a "Peter Parker"-like character by Steve Ditko before AF15. Or a Classic Kirby Big Lumpy Orange Guy before the Thing appeared. That's why I'm really skeptical of the "Prototype" moniker being generously applied to many books. Artists likely had a stable of character frames they were comfortable with applying to the context of the story based on all their past experiences. Change the skin tone, hair color, headgear of a specific "body template" based on what the story calls for to meet the deadlines and keep the cash rolling in. Like all professions they evolve based on prior successes and failures.

The specific story in question from Strange Tales 86 was Atlas job code V-221. During that period of job codes, it's pretty much just Kirby, Ditko, Reinmann & Heck contributing to that title.

All I got,

He's all Kirby. That thumb is skinny, sure, but the jawline is textbook. 2c

Another one has turned up, just like the one above.

What are the odds against that, eh?

I don't know if you are being playful here Albert but I'll bite.

It's oviously the same issue with the loose page(s) tucked in and the fold at the top left being flattened out.

So? Did I fall for it?
