The 1993 movie has only been available on VHS and DVD, but next month it’s getting the HD remaster on Blu-ray that it deserves! Bosco685 Posted November 15, 2017 Author Share Posted November 15, 2017 For those that like to collect their superhero movies and TV shows on digital instead of disc, Disney has re-released all its Marvel Studios films except for The Incredible Hulk as part of a blu-ray/Digital HD bundle. The only MCU movie I was missing from my digital collection. Turns out Paramount owned the digital rights up to last year. Fans of the studio's flicks have been stuck in 1080p for the last couple of years even as other studios have released 4K movies via streaming, downloads and disc. Now Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has confirmed on Facebook that his movie will be the first one from Disney released in 4K and HDR -- especially welcome thanks to the sharp image and vivid colors captured by using Red's Weapon 8K camera. According to Gunn, "4K UltraHD is almost certainly the best way you can see this movie at home - with more definition and the most vibrant colors possible on your home screen, and with the brightest brights and the blackest blacks. A being composed of light truly appears to be a being composed of light!" This opens the door to Ultra HD releases of other Marvel movies, the Star Wars series (it's the perfect time for a release of the original trilogy without any updated CGI) and more. Bosco685 Posted January 27, 2018 Author Share Posted January 27, 2018 'Elvira: Mistress of the Dark' Finally Coming to Blu-ray Quote Elvira fans underwent a rollercoaster of emotions in 2017, with an announcement early in the year confirming that her film, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, was coming to Blu-ray in a set jam-packed with special features. Unfortunately, before the year was over, news broke that the set had been canceled, leaving fans to wonder if the film would ever get the HD treatment. The new year brings along with it some good news, with Arrow Video teasing that they're taking over production on the Blu-ray, which will be released before the end of the year. The Blu-ray distributor's post was vague, merely confirming they would release not only Elvira's film but also 12 Monkeys, without specifying when the discs would be available or what special features could be found in either set. Hopefully Arrow can obtain the previously announced special features for their disc, which included a 100-minute documentary, multiple feature-length commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage and new interviews. The movie was originally released in 1988, at the height of the character's popularity, with another movie being made in 2001. Cassandra Peterson, the actress behind the character, shared with ComicBook.com last year that she doesn't see another movie in store for the character. "I go back and forth on that," Peterson confessed. "Honestly, I kind of feel like you can't reheat an old soufflé, and I wouldn't want to make another Elvira film if it didn't have the impact that the first one had, and that one has become a real cult classic." So I don't think we'll ever see most of the current Disney movies in real 4K unless the studio has multiple copies they haven't revealed to date. All of the current Disney Marvel movies are 2K upscaled to 4K, which means they're really just standard HD released in a 4K disc format. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was the first big 4K release, but it's upscaled. Supposedly Black Panther was shot in 3.4K, just shy of 4K quality but slightly lower. So I assume in a few years they will all be shot in higher resolution. A year and a half later this is still true today, virtually ALL Disney "4K" discs are 2K upscaled to 4K. Including all of the latest and upcoming releases like Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. Spider-Man: Homecoming was upscaled, but nobody's sure about Far From Home yet. Just recently got a new 55" Samsung 4K HDR television and I can definitely tell the difference between the standard Disney upscaled 4K films and the native 4K films, which within the superhero genre are many of the Fox films. Rip Posted July 21, 2019 Share Posted July 21, 2019 A few things. They don't film these in 2K. They output them using a lower digital Intermediate. They tend to shoot them at 3.4 or higher. Endgame used a custom 6K camera. X-Men: Apocalypse used a 6K camera. But its doubtful you will see all these in full 4K for a long time. Most movies with a lot of CG shots will be below 4K because the final render time and space of the VFX on these movies. Greatly adding to the cost and time. That said there are still many improvements to the standard HD blue rays. Most notably HDR (DV HDR+)color space and compression. Detail is also still an improvement. Even X-Men Apocalypse had CG shots output at 2K. Depending on the transfer and skill of those working on the transfer + camera used, some movies will have see a stronger detail improvement than others. Avengers is a strong upgrade from the blu ray. Batman Begins, not so much. Aquaman and John Wick 2 UHD's while output at 2K look amazing and crush the Blue rays. Larryw7 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
