Comic store recommendations

although you are a newbie, this particular question has much less to do with you being a newbie than it does with your lack of knowledge about the LA comic scene, unless one assumes that anyone that doesn't know what's up in LA is automatically a noob.  Which ironically is the attitude of many people in and around LA, but that's not particularly helpful for this question.  You would do better going to the Comics General Subforum and posting the question there.

Also, when you ask the question, if you know which parts of LA you're more likely to be looking for comics, you should try give people an idea, because LA (or the greater LA area) is huge (and full of traffic).  If you're taking the family to Disneyland (which really isn't LA), recommendations in the Valley aren't really useful.  If you're going to a wedding in Santa Monica, its not helpful to know about a store by Cal State LA.  If you're going to a football game at USC, pay more for parking close to the stadium (nothing to do with comics, just good advice).  But if you're going for work for a couple weeks and have a hotel downtown and a car, that's a pretty good central location that you can hit a lot of spots from.

But I would say if you've got a car and some free time, you should check out Frank and Sons, they have a collectible show once or twice a week 'near' LA that's pretty big.

Good luck.
