Adam Sztykiel, the creator of Undateable, is in negotiations to write New Line and DC Entertainment’s Black Adam movie, according to The Tracking Board.

The Black Adam movie still does not have a director, but Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will star as the titular antihero. Johnson will also produce, along with Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions and Beau Flynn of the Flynn Picture Company.

Sztykiel has worked with New Line previously on the films We’re the Millers 2 and Spy Guys. He’s also written the films Due Date, Made of Honor, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Trip, Diary of a Whimpy Kid: The Long Haul, and The Fight Before Christmas.

Wait...what?

Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill have taken many opportunities to tease fans over an epic battle between Superman and Black Adam.

It turns out that confrontation just might be in the works, according to a recent photo from Johnson's producing partner Dany Garcia. In the photo, Garcia is conversing with Cavill, though both are shrouded in darkness — a fact she used to pose a mystery to fans.

RAMPAGE Star Dwayne Johnson Teases That DC's BLACK ADAM Solo Film Is Expected To Begin Production In 2019

Quote

Recently, Johnson sat down for some interviews whilst promoting his next film Rampage. Yahoo was able to speak with the star about his upcoming work in the DC Extended Universe as Black Adam, and it was there Johnson said he thinks the film could start shooting by next year:

"The -script came in, it’s great, we’re working on it. I’m very excited about it. If things come together in the way we anticipate them coming together, that feels like a 2019 movie — in production."

It sounds like screenwriter Adam Sztykiel has been busy, if the -script for Black Adam has indeed been penned. Sztykiel was brought on to tackle the film in November of last year after Johnson worked with him on Rampage.

Also back in November of 2018, during a chat with We Got This Covered, the actor revealed why he felt Black Adam was such an appealing role to play:

"I love the idea that is backstory is that he starts off as a slave. I feel like when somebody is oppressed that way but has a bigger ambition and a greater belief than the oppression that’s holding him down - that’s a powerful place to be. [His] family getting killed, coming back from that; There’s a lot of elements about Black Adam that have attracted me for a very, very, very, very, very long time."

With Shazam! originally having planned to include Black Adam, a change came early in the film's development making a major difference for both DC Comics characters. Zachary Levi's titular Shazam! character would get his own origin story before Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam would get his own movie. The goal is to eventually have the two come face to face on the big screen, however, the filmmakers wisely split them up early on to ensure proper depth for each character.

"Early on before I came on board they had experimented with the possibility of doing a Shazam vs Black Adam movie but I think they felt that that was, you know, it was better to just focus on Shazam first and give him his proper space and not have to also do Black Adam," Shazam!director David F. Sandberg explained to ComicBook.com. "So it was a way of, like, have Sivana take more space and that, actually let him have some powers to play around with. So he could be a formidable foe."

When Shazam! hits theaters early next month, fans of DC Comics will see that the filmmakers shifted much of Black Adam's story from the Justice League comics in the New 52 run into that of Mark Strong's Sivana for the movie. According to Levi, this isn't a move made by removing Black Adam from the film, but there was always a plan to have Sivana be this key villain from the time he got involved.

"By the time I got the -script, Black Adam was no longer a part of the initial Shazam! offering of this first film and I think that was a very intelligent decision made by everyone involved, including The Rock, who is still to this point attached to play Black Adam," Levi explained in the video above. "Because trying to do two origin stories that you'd really -- and by the way, our movie does that a little bit. You get some origin for Sivana but you'd have to spend a heck of a lot more explaining Black Adam and explaining Billy Batson and Shazam! and so its like how did we get all that without feeling like we're diluting everything. So, the collective powers that be all were like 'Hey, let's just, we'll break it up,' so by the time I saw a -script it was Shazam! and Sivana was the baddie."

Johnson is currently attached to a different superhero universe: The Worlds of DC. He’s been set to play Black Adam there for quite some time, and was actually out talking about finally filming that movie a few weeks ago. As we reported at the time, he claimed that Black Adam should film in “about a year.”

That was mere weeks ago, following the successful opening weekend for Shazam!– a film he served as a producer for.

And yet now here we are, with Johnson celebrating the successful opening weekend of another movie that features a Captain Marvel, and he’s dropping hints that he likes the smell of what the folks who gave us Avengers: Endgame are cooking.

Here’s what he said in one of his frequent Instagram posts:

“Look what you guys did, Kevin. Congrats, and I know our assistants have been trying to get us together for dinner for months now. We’re both super busy boys and I look forward to our schedule linking up.”

The Kevin he’s referring to is Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. And that’s notable because Feige isn’t some wide-ranging film producer with a very diverse portfolio and slate of films coming up. Feige only makes Marvel movies. So if they’re trying to meet up, it’s absolutely to discuss a way for the megawatt superstar to come to the MCU.

DC fans shouldn’t panic just yet, though. This doesn’t mean that Johnson is abandoning ship, or suddenly not going to be Black Adam in the Worlds of DC. People have meetings in Hollywood all the time. It’s part of the culture. They like to kick the tires on things, bounce ideas around, and see if there’s money to be made.

Exclusive: Jaume Collet-Serra In Talks to Direct Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Black Adam’

Quote

Jaume Collet-Serra is one of the potential directors being considered for Warner Bros. and New Line’s Black Adam, Observer has learned. According to a source close to production, he is the top choice and is in talks with the studio. Collet-Serra directed Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as well as recent action flicks such as The Commuter, The Shallows and Run All Night.

Johnson helped to develop and produce Shazam! for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line and was originally meant to co-star in the film as the villain/anti-hero Black Adam. But as the story developed, the decision was made to remove the character from the -script and give him his own solo film as an introduction.

In April, Johnson updated fans on the project’s progress in an Instagram video and revealed why he was no longer a part of Shazam!.

“This project…we had some challenges and we took a risk,” Johnson, who became the highest-paid actor in history last year, said. “As we were developing this a few years ago, the challenges and the struggles that we were having and that was gnawing at my gut [was] that we were trying to tell two origin stories in one -script…. The challenges were, as you guys can imagine, you’re trying to tell two very big origin stories in the world of comic books of this DC Universe—two very important characters—trying to tell both their origin stories in one -script. I didn’t think it was working.”

Jaume Collet-Serra Eyed to Direct DC’s ‘Black Adam’ Starring Dwayne Johnson

“Jungle Cruise” director Jaume Collet-Serra and Dwayne Johnson are reuniting for Johnson’s first foray into the comic-book world.

Sources tell Variety that Collet-Serra is in negotiations to direct Johnson in the New Line film “Black Adam,” based on the DC Comics character.

According to insiders, the film is a priority for the studio following the success of “Shazam!” in addition to the hype surrounding Johnson’s first entry into the superhero realm. As for Collet-Serra, “The Shallows” director has been a front-runner for the film ever since his work with Johnson and producers Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn on Disney’s “Jungle Cruise.”

Johnson was very impressed with how Collet-Serra handled himself on such a large production and was surprised how seamlessly he was able to transition from darker material to much lighter material with such ease. Once production ended on “Jungle Cruise,” the decision to name him the director of “Black Adam” was an easy one to make.

Flynn of FlynnPictureCo will produce along with Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions. Scott Sheldon will oversee for FlynnPictuereCo, and Adam Sztykiel, who worked with Johnson and Flynn on “Rampage,” wrote the latest draft.

New Line planned to introduce Johnson as Black Adam in the first “Shazam!” film, but the producing team quickly made the conscious effort to separate the two characters with a “Black Adam” solo pic.

The DC comics character Shazam, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, is the alter ego of a boy named Billy Batson. Batson can transform into a superhero by saying the word “Shazam,” and Black Adam is Shazam’s arch nemesis.

“Shazam!” premiered in April with Zachary Levi starring and went on to become a huge success for the studio grossing $367 million worldwide.

Collet-Sera is also known for a number of other big hits including “The Shallows,” starring Blake Lively and “Non-Stop” and “Unknown,” both starring Liam Neeson.
