I think the show creators knew they had a hit when they sent those emails out to critics suggesting if they want to spoil what they saw, go ahead. They didn't give a s*#$. 

People were still going to watch this show.

Episode 6 is continued zaniness. With a Frank Miller-looking Batman that has Jim Gordon relationship issues.

King Shark is the surprise comedy spot.

Coincidentally, I have been rewatching Batman the Animated Series and just watch the episode that started it all.
