Netflix's CONAN THE BARBARIAN Show

MEN'S HEALTH: Netflix's Conan - Here's what we know about the live-action series so far.

Quote

Judging by the massive cult-hit that was Netflix's Cobra Kai, the '80s are back—and yet another figure from our distant memory is getting a refresh. The story of Conan the Barbarian, the brawny, mythical, sword-carrying hero, is being adapted for a live-action series over at Netflix, Deadline reports.

Originally created by author Robert E. Howard in a series of short stories, the icon has inspired several comic books, TV series, and, of course, the 1982 film and 1984 sequel starring none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger himself (as well as the eventual and less successful 2011 reboot starring Jason Momoa). While the original film was considered a box-office flop, it'd gain cult status among Schwarzenegger-devotees and movie-goers alike, largely launching Arnie's film career.

So far, details on the new series are slim—executive producers are still searching for a showrunner and, presumably, a new Conan to fit the bill—but we'd venture to guess you can expect a cameo by Arnold himself.

Back in August 2019, Schwarzenegger was in talks with the director for another sequel in the Conan franchise. For years, legal issues with the rights holders (and Schwarzegger's political career) meant the franchise was in an indefinite holding pattern.

While it doesn't look like things panned out for the movie, he probably hasn't given up hope on holding the sword again in the future. Here's hoping we see him don Conan's legendary war skirt once more.

Supernatural's Jared Padalecki NEARLY Played Conan the Barbarian - Here's Why He Didn't

Quote

In 2011, there was a Conan the Barbarian reboot starring Jason Momoa as the titular character of Conan.

The film received poor reviews from critics and was a box office bomb, but that didn't stop people from noticing the charisma of star Jason Momoa. It was his first major film role and is likely what influenced his casting as Khal Drogo on HBO's Game of Thrones that very same year. Momoa almost didn't get the role though. Had things been different, the theater would have been filled with devoted Supernatural fans. As it turns out, Conan was almost played by Sam Winchester himself, Jared Padalecki.

Supernatural series creator Eric Kripke wanted to end the show after Season 5, and coincidentally, it was near the end of Season 4 when both Winchesters started auditioning for other roles. Padalecki starred in the Friday the 13th remake and Ackles in the My Bloody Valentine remake, which both came out in 2009. Friday the 13th, which released to mixed reviews but strong box office numbers, was directed by Marcus Nispel. Nispel didn't waste any time getting started on his next movie: Conan the Barbarian.

Padalecki auditioned for the role of Conan and was apparently one of the three final picks before Momoa was ultimately chosen. It was down to Padalecki, Momoa and Twilight actor Kellan Lutz who would go on to star in a very similar film, The Legend of Hercules, in 2014.

Would love to see this, but I personally don't think they'll have the balls to adapt Red Nails or Frost Giant's Daughter without neutering  it a bit given the sexual overtones mixed with graphic violence.

Then again, we did get Starz Spartacus so you never know.

after Game Of Thrones and The Boys not much is off limits.

Oh man I think I heard of Korgoth before. Just looked it up and seems it only had the pilot episode? Any idea where to watch? Poked around and couldn’t find anything other than YouTube clips.

Grab the following issues whenever possible while you are at it:

7, 14/15, 58, 84, Annual 2

Public service announcement over.

You may laugh but I do feel 23 and 24 are seriously undervalued still and see both as still having tons of room to grow. All other female characters have exploded in value and Red Sonja, for reasons unknown,  hasn't blown up as she deserves too. Dynamite has been putting out some great Sonja books.

Any new news on this? I did a quick search but all the news is pretty old at this point.

Nothing yet. That first casting news will be very telling.

Funcom this week announced that it has fully acquired Cabinet Group, which held a number of different intellectual properties like Conan the Barbarian and Mutant Year Zero. The company is set to merge all of the acquired IPs into the IP studio Heroic Signatures, and Funcom is working on some kind of video game featuring several characters from the worlds of Robert E. Howard.

Notably, Funcom previously worked with Cabinet Group for years to license Conan the Barbarian for several video games like Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures and Conan Exiles. As such, it is not terribly surprising that Funcom should acquire it. Even so, Cabinet Group previously licensed Conan the Barbarian, for example elsewhere with Marvel publishing comics and Netflix working on a series. From the way the press release announcing the acquisition reads, it seems like those deals will continue under new management.

"We are currently overseeing the development of an unannounced game which will combine many of the characters in the Robert E. Howard universe," said Funcom CEO Rui Casais as part of the announcement. "And if you combine Funcom's knowledge of games with Heroic Signatures' knowledge of the TV/entertainment, publishing, and licensing industries, it makes us perfectly placed to take this venture to the next level. It's exciting times ahead for us and for fans of the IPs."

"The entertainment industry is rapidly becoming more 'techified.' We've seen brilliant examples of how games have incorporated IPs in innovative ways to reach audience numbers that vastly surpass previous levels," said Fredrik Malmberg, co-founder and CEO of Cabinet Group, who will now be President of Heroic Signatures. "What Fortnite has done with The Avengers, for instance, or the impact a live in-game concert can have on awareness. We are looking forward to sitting down with other entertainment companies who share our vision and wish to take part in the exciting journey we have ahead."

I was looking forward to a third movie with Old Man Arnold reprising his role as Conan the Conquerer (or whatever they planned on calling it). Stallone managed a spectacular series comeback with Rambo 4 twenty-years later. It should have ended there as the last scene was the perfect close for the entire series. But they had to make the mediocre part 5. Arnold needs to get back in the gym and give us a third Conan movie.

I'm with you. I so wanted that King Conan movie

Turns out it came down the rights to the character being passed around.

King Conan: Arnold Schwarzenegger On Why Sequel Hasn't Happened

Quote

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently sat down with website The Arnold Fans to talk about a number of projects including King Conan, the proposed sequel to 1982's Conan the Barbarian and 1984's Conan the Destroyer. Alternately referred to as Legend of Conan, the project had been teased as long ago as 2012, when rights holders Paradox Entertainment (since rebranded as Cabinet Entertainment) announced that they were moving forward with a story that they called "Conan's Unforgiven," referring to the classic 1992 Clint Eastwood film about an old gunslinger who reluctantly picks up his guns one last time.

Production studio Universal ultimately opted to drop the project, and it's been in a state of flux since then. It was even briefly thought that the property would get the small screen treatment, with Amazon Prime announcing plans to develop a series in February of last year before unceremoniously scrapping those plans just months later.

So the company that just sold the rights was the holdup.
