Just how bad is it to have rusty staples in a comic?

I was looking at a comic on-line that was described as having "some" rust on the staples.  That got me thinking:  rust seems to always progress (just look at my 1972 Datsun 240Z for proof), never get better.  Would a book with rust on the staples just continue to deteriorate?  Should rust on the staples be a deal-breaker when considering a purchase?

Rust never sleeps. I try to avoid rust on staples and only books with a tiny 'spot' are even acceptable to me. However, I have owned books with a tiny 'spot' that seems to be contained and did not get worse. Full rust with contamination to the paper is a deal breaker, IMO.

Thank you for your thoughts.
