No month. Not on the cover either. So how do we know it's April, as the GCD has it?

The last three numbers on the cover indicate year and month . the 3 is the last number of the year and the 04 = April.

Excellent! I told you the research was in it's infancy

Thanks Gnash. I'll have a read. I've concentrated more on the physical appearances than the finesse on these - sharing brings the details in I find (thumbsu

Afternoon  :)

I'm still beavering away at Gold Key. Here's my latest find, Tom & Jerry #274, 6p copy:

1891298865_TomandJerry274(Sep73)6p.thumb.jpg.d22982ec6d31761e8c5de7408729f87e.jpg

I love the colours and simplicity of these covers.

It brings me up to 99 confirmed copies for Gold Key, across the 8 titles for which pence copies have been found. I'm planning some more intensive research next year on Gold Key. I find it odd that pence copies exist for only these 8 titles given how many there are (Mike's Comic Newsstand site lists 333 titles, albeit many are outside the current pence dates):

In all my other pence threads (Marvel, DC, King, Archie etc) I've summarised not only the titles that have pence copies for the existing date range, but also those that don't. I gave up with Gold Key as there are so many, preferring to concentrate on what exists rather than spend time documenting what doesn't. But I'll get round to it.

There are some gap scenarios which indicate that pence copies may not be found, and it may be that there are not many more left to find. Time as ever will tell. I have a new computer at last, which is lightning fast, so hope to expand on all my 'junior' pence threads more in the New Year.

Have fun, if you're reading / following :headbang:

Still on 99 Gold Keys....

Here's Boris, man of Mysteries, while we wait for another newcomer. 51 to be precise, a good age I feel.

That's some snail isn't it.

Although he is one 17, Boris isn't like the other Gold Keys. He's special. Apart from his 6p cover price he has one other cover difference which makes him unique among his 16 other Boris pen(ce) friends. Can you see it? hm

Ah-ha!

No 16 page 'fun-catalog' for the UK readers it seems. Still, we don't need it being quite funny already :insane:

The Golden Keys shot up a bit recently, after a discovery of a batch hiding in plain sight.

So we're up to 104 of them now:

Is anybody interested but me? Doesn't look like it does it. Too busy off having fun, bowling somewhere probably....

Morning :)

Poor Sylvester looks a bit rough there doesn't he:

Still, the good news is that Tweety is telling him that his arrival has pushed back the known Gold Key pence date range from April to March 1973:

1148460476_gk105.thumb.PNG.cde20d30adc857fda71d3e9a8e6a7d5e.PNG

I wonder if the Pinky Pink Panther, the Rinkydink Panther #11 will show too in time? pp.gif.01e9e656315a464e6adfbcf0db88d7f3.gif

The March 1973 T&S increases the known pence tally to 105, up one, and the total potential pence copies (assuming I've got my sums right) to 171.

However, the online Star Trek community are more or less convinced that the missing pence Trek books will never appear. If true, the presence of gaps will be a thing, and a thing which may affect the other seven confirmed pence titles. So when we look at the gaps here...

gk2.thumb.PNG.4c68c77284f57a5747d65566a038d257.PNG

...we see a 'pence book, no pence book, pence book, no pence book, pence book' pattern affecting five titles from June to November 1975. So maybe they don't exist either...?

Food for thought, as the hunt continues for them pence priced Keys of Goldness hm

I got to wondering on this subject of missing pence comic when pondering the lack of pence issues for Marvel in the latter half of the 60's, and wondered if it was due to the stories being syndicated in UK comics such as POW!.

Likewise with Gold Key, I know The Pink Panther had story pages in TV Comic, as were probably some of the other cartoon series. I've no idea though if they were syndicated from Gold Key itself, or new stories completely?

Just an idea.

It's a fairly well established idea Bob - we know that Amazing Spidey stopped at issue 120 so as not to clash with 'Spider-Man Comics Weekly' etc.

As for Gold Key, I think it's likely that the same concept applied - extract from an earlier post speculates as much (I've since found T&J 270 to 276 but none beyond):

In my Marvel research I identify that the absence of Amazing Spider-Man pence copies from issue 121 up coincides with the launch of Spider-Man Comics Weekly in the UK. No point importing a pence version of the US books if you have your own ongoing title. In a similar vein, Tom and Jerry seems to 'stop' at number 276, November 1973:

Lo and behold, the UK Tom and Jerry weekly commences in October 1973:

Coincidence?

Why do you call them "pence price variants" instead of what they really are - UK editions?

I refer the honourable gentleman to the reply I gave earlier in the Marvel Pence Priced Variants thread :)

Afternoon Lovers of the Pence Keys of Gold :)

Here's a key Gold Key which takes us up to 107 confirmed pence copies (or "UK Price Variants" if you want to upset a Duck):

T&J are filling up now, and maybe only #273 is outstanding (see previous pontifications)

Funny story with this one. I've worked for a charity for 7 years now. In all that time I could count the number of comics I've seen donated on one hand. I got a call the other week from one of the shop Managers "Steve, we've got some comics!". Off I dashed, dreaming of AF15's and the like. when I got there, they were old UK comics worth zilch. But inside one of them, was this Tom and Jerry. What are the chances! quite high probably, being in Englandville I suppose.

Anyway, maestro, take it away
