Afternoon, followers of The Pence Keys of Gold! :)

Two bright 6p friends arrived today, courtesy of Postman Pat and his black and white donkey (the donkey sat on the ferret):

Nice aren't they :)

I'm quite enjoying collecting these and have about half of the currently known (to me) 109 pence copies.

The earliest pence copy I know of is dated March 1973 and, accordingly, the earliest Tom and Jerry is #270:

One thing I've seen a lot of is copies of T&J #265 and 266 with the same 6p price stickers on them. Here's two examples:

And here's another two:

And here are a third set, together in one auction lot:

The 6p stickers are very similar to the font used on the later printed copies:

Given the similarity, and the multiple copies seen, it must have been an 'official' process wouldn't you say, that led on to the copies with printed prices?

We'll probably never know...

No 16 page 'fun-catalog' for the UK readers it seems. Still, we don't need it being quite funny already :insane:

See Road Runner #47 for other such extraneous banner details (that you can't live without) 123553923_1_400.jpg.422500c9211c96d383bb59c61660d1d3.jpg

Further to the above, on the subject of cosmetic Fun Catalog cover differences:

Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #58 (this copy is missing the bottom right corner advert of the US version) :)

Afternoon :)

I happened across a website for a book shop in Manchester with pictures of eight new Gold Key pence copies - eight!

para.thumb.PNG.58fcbb1c0b0189cf997533f50a2f37ec.PNG

I was ridiculously excited, which is unbecoming of a man my age, and rang to buy them. Well, what can I say. I have never met (on the phone) such an unhelpful group of people. They wouldn't tell me what they had left, denied the terms on their own website existed and refused to check or post anything found to me. I could go on, but all my enthusiasm and joy slowly turned to dusty exasperation and I gave up.

I could risk the 4 hour drive there, but I decided that though the books were something I'd dearly love to have - if only to support the research here - that it would actually stick in my throat to give them my money. And the prices he threw into the air were ridiculous anyway.

So there you go, some people just stamp on your throat don't they.

Now, one of the books throws my 'gap analysis' into question, and therefore don't reply on that if you're reading.

This is my last post in this thread (sorry Fog)

Have fun

Steve

I SAY BOY !! I SAY I LOVE ME SOME PISTOL TOTING YOSEMITE SAM COMICS !

Sam was the star of his own comic book series from 1970 to 1984, for a total of 81 issues. Published by Gold Key / Whitman Comics, the official title of the series was Yosemite Sam and Bugs Bunny

I see you finally decided to go to that shop in Manchester and pick these up !!  ?????

Lets hear the story and how did the negotiations work out ??

I found these on ebay actually. A bit tatty but you can't have everything. The Mancunian copies may still be there. Hopefully giving their unhelpful shop owning owner paper cuts on a regular basis.

Seven pee, seven pee,

Seven pee is the price you see.

In a wonky diamond, this is how you find them

When a US price cannot be seen

Does make one wonder why UK editions of "Doctor Solar" and "Magnus Robot Fighter" were deemed unworthy.  I'd have thought those titles held a greater appeal than some of the Warner character books.

"Star Trek" and not "Lost in Space"? No "Turok"?

hm

Yes, not sure why just eight titles were chosen from the scores of titles running at the time. From a TV show perspective, I can understand the cartoons getting the pence treatment as Road Runner, Tom & Jerry, Pink Panther, Tweety, Yosemite and Bugs were all household names and repeated regularly over here. Ditto Start Trek of course. But Boris and Ripley's weren't exactly prominent, to my recollection. We had Lost in Space over here but I don't recall anything to do with Magnus, Turok or Doctor Solar myself that would have warranted a pence version of them. But maybe I just wasn't paying attention.
