Yep Sony will make total bank on this film.
And this is the last film they have a deal with Marvel for so unless they do up another deal Spidey will be in Sony's new universe and no longer in the MCU.

And Spider-Man would probably tank quality-wise to Raimi Spider-Man 3 or ASM2 levels. Making a cartoon is one thing. Making live action another. Fans want to see Spider-Man play in the MCU and that's all. That's where we are.

That's why Amy Pascal just announced there will be another MCU Spider-Man trilogy after this one. Sony isn't completely brain dead, though Disney will eventually outright own Spider-Man anyway without paying a dime once Sony sells off Columbia Pictures due to the fact that the Spider-Man related movies are their only film franchise that brings in real money.

While I have no doubt that one day Disney will own Spider-Man film rights, it will not be for "free" which you are posting.  Sony knows what they have in Spider-man, Disney is going to have to pay through the nose to get those rights back.  Sony may not be the best at managing a film division, but they are not dullards either.  They know what they have with Spider-man rights.

Most of the past old Marvel deals had a clause in them requiring the studio must use the character at least once every 10 years to maintain rights.  If not those rights reverted to Marvel (now Disney). That is why we got that abomination of  a FF reboot.  Spidey may be the same thing. If so Sony will make something just to keep the rights.

Exactly, Sony will throw something out there just to hold onto the rights.  There is no way Marvel/Disney gets Spider-man back "for free" as Silvermane is alluding to.

That's all you had to say. He thoroughly researches everything he posts in advance.

Plus, we know Disney is still bound to all those old deals.  They had to negotiate use of Spider-Man.  In addition, it is why Universe has the better MCU characters in Florida, and why we have not seen many Marvel attractions at Disney World (they are doing Gardians now which was not part of the original deal).  Universal must be asking a ton for the rights back, if they would do it at all.  Otherwise Disney World would be 25% MCU at this point. I would not even be shocked if there would have not been a 5th park there by now if they had the rights.

Disney bought frikkin' Star Wars!  When they decide they want Spidey all to themselves, they'll get him.

Lucas wanted to sell to Disney. Disney has always wanted Spider-Man. There were negotiations that Sony just walked away from. Eventually that limited shared deal was reached. Disney would probably have to buy Sony outright in order to get Spider-Man. This may prove difficult even if Sony decided to sell out as Congressional hearings would undoubtably take place. But I’m sure Disney has some friends in the right seats to grease the wheels.

You may be right, everyone has a I will let it go for this price amount.  Sony may have one of these, I am sure it is astronomical.  But after Disney got burned on spending over $70 billion on Fox, and having to borrow money to keep afloat during the pandemic,  they likely do not have the money today, and/or the willingness to meet that price.

Disney will be somewhat content on working these shared rights deals for Spidey, which are relatively low financial risk for them.

Spider-Man has been Marvel's flagship character for 50+ years. Sony knows that.

Exactly!

When silvermenagerie notes 'nobody cares about Spider-Man anymore' that has got to be some of the craziest statements. Spider-Man is one of THE key characters of the Marvel Universe.

lol

Despite Superman and Batman being 'more popular' than him, Spider-Man is currently considered "the world's favorite superhero" (probably because his overall character is really relatable for kids/teens).

Shazam was a really good movie. Far better than Captain Marvel.  I make that statement conceding the latter made a lot more money.

Luckily, money is not equal to popularity, especially in the case of sandwiching a new character between Infinity War and Endgame.

I've been having this kind of 'argument' on (big surprise) Reddit. The claim is that, "Spider-Man is the most popular comic book character in the world", and the 'support' is merchandise sales per title. Above Spider-Man is Anpanman. Do these people really believe that Anpanman is more popular in the whole world than Spider-Man simply because the character makes more money almost exclusively from Asia?

[For the record, I submit that conventional wisdom dictates Superman and Batman are both more 'popular' than any other comics character. Favoritism is another subject.]
