CBS execs David Stapf, Julie McNamara and Deborah Barak lifted the lid on a variety of topics including becoming a “bona fide” premium studio, its appetite for overall writer deals, its forthcoming 90210 reboot and its Michelle Yeoh-fronted Star Trekspin-off.

In Star Trek news, Stapf revealed that the Michelle Yeoh-fronted spin-off, Section 31, which is at CBS All Access, will shoot in Toronto but that “it’s a good couple of years away”.

Kurtzman, who serves as the leading producer for Paramount+'s Star Trek content, updated fans on Section 31 during a panel with the Producers Guild of America (via TrekMovie.com). Though some fans might be concerned about the slow progress of the series, Kurtzman stated he's optimistic about its chances. He said the pandemic is a large reason for the recent delays, but that Section 31 remains on track:

"We actually have a couple of [Section 31] scripts. COVID frankly, just changed the game for everybody and every show. We were on a very specific schedule that then got thrown completely into whack because of COVID. Even Discovery season four started many months later than originally planned, Picard too. Everything got pushed… So we’re actually on a great track with Section 31 and I’m very optimistic about it."

Star Trek Section 31 spinoff is still in development, with more news coming soon. The shadowy group dedicated to protecting the Federation’s interests by any means necessary was first introduced in the TV show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Now Paramount+ has offered their own update on Section 31, saying at their 2022 TCA presentation that the spinoff is indeed still in development for the streaming service, and that there will be more news coming in the near future.

Michelle Yeoh teases her return to Star Trek in Section 31 as a blend of Mission: Impossible and Guardians of the Galaxy. Yeoh is currently enjoying the spotlight cast on her by her new, critically acclaimed film Everything Everywhere All at Once. However, she's still plotting a course back to the Star Trek universe as Philippa Georgiou, former Terran Emperor, and current Section 31 agent. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in support of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Yeoh offered a brief description of what fans should expect from the Section 31 series.

"Section 31 is that [Star Trek] universe but different," Yeoh says. "It's like Mission: Impossible meets Guardians of the Galaxy in space."

Section 31 spins out of Yeoh's role in Star Trek: Discovery. News of the series first hit in early 2019, with plans to film the pilot immediately after Discovery wrapped on its third season. However, that timing proved poor as Discovery wrapped filming season three as the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Section 31 has been put on the back burner until one of the currently running Star Trek shows comes to a close (Star Trek: Picard will end with its third season). In February, Nicole Clemens, Paramount+'s president of original scripted series, confirmed at the TCA Press Tour that the streaming service is "still in development on Section 31." She also teased that "there will be more news on [Section 31] soon."

During a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Kurtzman was asked if he could speak to any live-action plans for Kate Mulgrew's Admiral Kathryn Janeway. "I can't," he replied. "But yes, what I can tell you is we do have plans..." When asked if those plans were for Janeway specifically, Kurtzman added, "No, we have plans for new things. I'm not speaking specifically about anything. But yes, there's quite a few plans, and you'll hear about them soon. We will continue to expand the Star Trek universe, absolutely."

Kurtzman was then asked if said expansion plans include Yeoh's Section 31 spinoff. "I can tell you that we're still very excited about Section 31," he said. "And that's all I will say." Yeoh made her Star Trek debut as Captain Philippa Georgiou in the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery, which Kurtzman co-created with Bryan Fuller. Discovery premiered on Paramount+ (then known as CBS All Access) in 2017. While Captain Georgiou was killed off very early into the show's run, Yeoh returned to play Emperor Philippa Georgiou -- the Starfleet captain's Mirror-Universe counterpart -- staring with the latter half of Season 1 in 2018. Yeoh continued to play Mirror Georgiou on Discovery through Season 3 in 2020.

Paramount+ is officially moving forward on a “Star Trek: Section 31” project starring Michelle Yeoh, but it will now be an event film instead of a series, Variety has learned.

It was first reported that a Section 31 series with Yeoh was in development back in 2019. In the film, Yeoh will reprise the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou, whom she began playing during Season 1 of “Star Trek: Discovery.”

Per the official logline, “Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Rumors of a Yeoh-led Section 31 project began upon the conclusion of Season 1 of “Discovery,” after a deleted scene revealed Georgiou being approached by a member of the shadowy intelligence organization on the Klingon homeworld.

Looks like Paramount has converted the planned show into a movie. But as a streaming release.
