Marvel Confirms Black Panther Star Chadwick Boseman For Multiple Episodes of MCU's What If...?

Quote

The imagination of fans ran wild when an animated series called What If...? was announced by Marvel Studios, boasting the return of many of the characters' original actors. The show even became one of the most demanded on Disney+.

The first publicly-released footage from the show featured T'Challa sporting Star Lord's iconic helmet for an episode. However, after the passing of Chadwick Boseman, fans became unsure whether the actor had recorded his lines for the character before his passing.

Entertainment insider Daniel Richtman previously tweeted that Chadwick Boseman had indeed finished recording his lines for What If...?, which has now been confirmed by Kevin Feige, along with additional news of Boseman's involvement in other episodes of the animated series.

CONFIRMATION
In the latest issue of Emmy, a page summarizes most of Marvel Studios' Disney+ shows that are planning to release next year, including What If...?, Marvel Studios' first animated show. The description boasts about many of the original actors coming back to voice their characters, including Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shares that the series will present "all sorts of stories [Marvel] couldn't explore through live action."

For the first time since 2009, the world went the year without a single Marvel Studios project. During the Disney Investors Day presentation on Dec. 10, studio chief Kevin Feige made clear that, should all go to plan, by the end of 2021, Marvel will come roaring back with a whopping 10 titles in theaters and on Disney Plus — and at least 15 more in the works for 2022 and beyond. Here’s what’s in store.

Marvel Studios’ first animated series posits a collection of alternative storylines, including what if Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) took the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, or what if Yondu (Michael Rooker) nabbed a young T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) from Earth instead of a young Peter Quill? Jeffrey Wright will oversee it all as the Watcher, the series’ narrator.

MCU Tie-In: It’s unclear whether any of these alternative storylines will affect the larger MCU, but a multitude of MCU actors are set to do voice work, including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Karen Gillan, Michael B. Jordan, Josh Brolin, Michael Douglas, Jeff Goldblum and Natalie Portman.

Even before we get to the highly anticipated Strange follow-up, it looks like the multiverse could make its presence known. One of the first leaks — from more Marvel merchandise, nonetheless — from Marvel's What If...? has started to go viral online, showing off the show's "Guardians of the Multiverse."

In the snippets of the animated show we've seen so far, we've been introduced to Hayley Atwell's Captain Britain and Chadwick Boseman's Star-Lord. In the latest poster, it looks like Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) will also have a role in the series, even though they largely look identical to their live-action counterparts. Also on the poster are Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan).

According to What If...? writer AC Bradley, fans should see characters from all of Marvel's 23 live-action movies released so far.

"Kevin said that we will be exploring every movie in a new way, but not every episode is about one movie if that makes sense," Bradley previously told Discussing Film. "On the reel [shown at D23 Expo], there is this image of a Star-Lord T'Challa because we wanted to see what if the worlds of Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy collided? That was taking two universes, two to three movies, kind of twisting them in new ways."

A movie-per-episode is "not the objective," Bradley added. "The objective is to hopefully see the majority of characters from all 23 movies. You'll see multiple characters in an episode."

Loki is hitting the streaming service on June 9th and it will be followed by the highly-anticipated animated series What If... which is expected to premiere in August. The show will put a twist on many of the characters and stories from the Marvel Cinematic Universe ranging from Peggy Carter taking the super-soldier serum to T'Challa becoming Star-Lord. In the summer issue of Disney’s D23 Magazine (via The Direct), producer Brad Winderbaum teased a lot of excitement in the upcoming series.

"As you can imagine, there are so many great moments in the films to choose from. Very quickly, you start to geek out. And you wonder, 'What if Peggy Carter got into that pod instead of Steve Rogers and she became a Super Soldier? What would have happened in World War II?' Then you start to think about what else was happening in that movie. The Red Skull would still be out there, of course, and the Tesseract would still be a problem," Winderbaum shared.

"You start piecing it together and it leads to another discovery: 'If Steve Rogers stayed skinny, he’d still be a part of the story. He and Peggy would still fall in love, probably. What if Howard Stark build them an Iron Man suit and the Tesseract was the thing that powered it?' When we looked at those initial ideas, we picked ones that took on a life of their own, where it was more than, 'Wouldn’t it be cool it…?' It was," he added.

Describing What If...? during Disney Investor Day 2019, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige said the animated series would "feature a different moment from the MCU and turn it on its head." The series' creator, A.C. Bradley, later clarified that the series would not dedicate a single episode to every film in the MCU canon, but that its objective was "to hopefully see the majority of characters from all 23 movies. You'll see multiple characters in an episode."

Nice cod piece on the Sakaarian.

I want the Watcher.

The cod piece is there because the armor transforms into a racecar and that's the nose cone. I like the color scheme of the set a lot, it'll probably look cool animated, but the Watcher is definitely the biggest draw here. I imagine there are more sets to go along with this line,  so I'm wondering if the Watcher will be packed in every set hm

Trailer looked good. I like how they’re incorporating the live action actors to do the voices. I’d love to see some of the books from the original series adapted but I think they’d have to introduce the characters they got from Fox into regular continuity first. Let’s see what it does to back issue sales too.

That first What If and some of the others tied into already popular stories are always in some demand.

What If… The Spider-Clone Survived? (Vol 1 #30)
As originally occurred in Amazing Spider-Man #148-150, Spider-Man defeats his “evil” clone, and goes on to live out his life happily clone-free.

What If… Daredevil Joined S.H.I.E.L.D.? (Vol 1 #28)
This issue has three different stories by a handful of creators, yet the themes manage to coexist well. Though the cover story is a Frank Miller-written-and-illustrated romp with Daredevil, the story that catches my eye the most is Ghost Rider’s.

What If… Thor Fought Odin for Jane Foster? (Vol 1 #25)
When Thor chose Jane Foster as his true love and companion, he attempted to bring her to Asgard to integrate her into his world of gods and legends. Odin found Jane wanting, and sent her away, leaving Thor torn between Earth and Asgard for years to come. This story imagines what might have happened if Thor had taken a stand against his father on Jane’s behalf, but sadly, it’s not exactly the love story you might have been hoping for.

What If… Doom Were a Hero? (Vol 1 #22)
In this reimagining of Doom’s origin story, we meet a surprisingly level-headed Victor, who works with Reed Richards rather than against him. Taking Reed as an assistant and heeding his good-faith warnings about tampering with things beyond his control, Victor does not end up scarred, and their feud never manifests.

What if...Hulk had the Brain of Bruce Banner? (Vol. 1 #2)

This early tale is wild and wacky, but it really follows through on exploring its premise. Here, Bruce Banner’s mind remains intact when he first becomes the Hulk. It leads to a different life where he finds a decent balance between being a scientist and occasionally a green giant. He becomes friendly with the military and Fantastic Four, offers aid during emergencies, and helps cure hero Ben Grimm of being the monstrous Thing.

What if...Wolverine had Killed the Hulk? (Vol. 1 #31)

You’d never know it from his later fame, but Wolverine’s first appearance was as a one-off villain in The Incredible Hulk. The Canadian government ordered him to capture the rampaging green goliath, the battle ended in a draw and in his next appearance Wolverine was one of the X-Men.
