Damn. I was hoping for a more R-rated GL show. Looks like it will just be PG-13 or G like the rest of the CW slate. Ugh. That means no Blackest Night story arc, or if they do it then it will not be worth watching.........

This doesn’t excite me...

I'm still excited to see this. But also get the concern as the Arrowverse shows definitely have gone through some lackluster periods at times. Too many times.

After several years of anticipation, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally coming to HBO Max in 2021. The project is still taking form and details are still being finalized. Will it be a film or a TV miniseries? Will additional photography and/or reshoots take place, or will only the VFX work be completed on the 214 minute cut Zack Snyder has already composed? The answers to these questions are still unknown, and without more details, all we can do is speculate.

Lucky for you, here at The Illuminerdi, we thoroughly enjoy speculating about the future of comic book cinema, and we’ve put together a theory regarding a fan favorite member of the Justice League who, while not seen in the theatrical release, was confirmed to be a part of the original cut by Snyder himself in December of 2019.

GREEN LANTERN IS COMING TO HBOMAX

While a Green Lantern was very briefly featured in the scene where Steppenwolf first attacked Earth in the theatrical release of Justice League, his identity was unknown and on top of that, he died almost instantly. When asked if that character was a Joss Whedon creation or a Zack Snyder creation, Snyder revealed that while he did include that Green Lantern, he was not “The Green Lantern” of the film.

In other words, Snyder confirmed that another Green Lantern was involved in his version of the film, presumably in a more important role. We do not know who was cast, or what specific role this second Green Lantern played in the film. Considering that a Green Lantern Corps film set in the DCEU was confirmed to star Hal Jordan and John Stewart a few short months before Justice League’s release, it seems safe to assume that the Green Lantern in Zack Snyder’s Justice League is one of those two characters.

The Snyder Cut is not the only place Green Lantern will be popping up on WB’s new streamer. As a Green Lantern series was announced for HBO Max last October, just weeks before Warner Brothers reached out to Zack Snyder expressing interest in his cut of Justice League. In January, the series was confirmed to have two Green Lanterns in leading roles.

GREEN LANTERN’S SUSPICIOUSLY COINCIDENTAL TIMELINE

  • 2014: Justice League and Green Lantern films were announced along with the rest of the original DCEU slate.
  • July 2017: Hal Jordan and John Stewart are confirmed as the dual leads of Green Lantern Corps, just months before Justice League’s theatrical release.
  • June 2018: Geoff Johns is announced as the screenwriter of Green Lantern Corps.
  • October 2019: HBOMax Green Lantern series is announced.
  • November 2019: Warner Brothers reaches out to Zack Snyder in regards to the Snyder Cut.
  • December 2019: Snyder confirms that “The Green Lantern” is in his cut of Justice League
  • January 2020: The HBO Max Green Lantern series is announced to feature two Green Lanterns as the leads.
  • April 2020: Geoff Johns boards Green Lantern HBO Max series as executive producer.
  • May 2020: Zack Snyder’s Justice League is officially announced.

It’s possible that a unique Green Lantern trilogy (Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Green Lantern on HBOMax, Green Lantern Corps) has taken shape in front of our eyes without anyone realizing it? Maybe we’re just grasping at straws here, but the deeper we dig, the more it makes sense. The Snyder Cut is arguably the most hotly anticipated HBO Max original, and Zack Snyder has already cast DC two billion dollar stars in the way of Jason Momoa and Gal Gadot, perhaps he could do the same with Green Lantern.

HBO Max launches on Wednesday and for DC fans that means there will now be two streaming services where they can enjoy comics-inspired film and television entertainment -- including originals. Most notably for HBO Max, a Green Lantern series is in the works from producer Greg Berlanti who is well-known to DC fans as being the producer behind The CW's popular Arrowverse. However, while Berlanti is behind both the upcoming Green Lantern series and fan-favorites such as The Flash, Supergirl, and Batwoman, fans of HBO Max's DC Originals can expect one major difference between the offerings: the budget. HBO Max's DC shows will have a much bigger budget than their The CW cousins.

According to HBO Max executive Kevin Reilly, the HBO Max's original DC content will have production values akin to what one might expect from feature films, something that makes them a "step up" from what fans experience with The CW.

"Greg [Berlanti, who is producing a Green Lantern series for Max] has done a lot of really quality DC fare for The CW," Reilly told Business Insider. "These will not be that. These will be next step up in production value. You can expect the highest level of cinematic production values on those shows, and that's the same for the projects we've announced with J.J. [Abrams]."

HBO Max's Green Lantern series was announced last year with Berlanti saying at the time "in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can't reveal any more about that just yet" and when it comes to Green Lantern in particular, that series having a much larger budget makes a lot of sense. With Green Lantern sending things to space, the series will need to rely on VFX on a much larger scale than what is utilized for The CW's Arrowverse.

Marc Guggenheim will co-write the inaugural episode.

HBO Max’s Green Lantern series has powered up its lantern, landing its showrunner.

Seth Grahame-Smith, the Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter novelist-turned-screenwriter of such movies as The Lego Batman Movie, will act as showrunner of the DC Comics-based series and co-write the inaugural episode with Marc Guggenheim, the co-creator of DC shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

Lantern, a one-hour drama, has been given a 10 episode straight-to-series order. It hails from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Greg Berlanti and Geoff Johns, the comics  author-turned-DC show creator, were involved in the 2011 Green Lantern movie as was Guggenheim. While the movie didn’t shine green at the box office, the show is being seen as a way to course correct and re-introduce one of the longest-lasting names in superhero comics.

The makers are describing the show as a saga spanning decades and galaxies And will feature a host of Green Lanterns, the galactic police officers that patrol the known and unknown universe. The show will focus on Earth-centric Lanterns Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Alan Scott and will also have alien Lanterns such as fan-favorite Kilowog, as well as Sinestro, a former Lantern now turned villain.

Scott is the original Green Lantern, first introduced in 1940’s All-American Comics #16. In  the past decade, he has been receated as a gay character. Gardner was created in the 1960s and has a tough-talking, fists first attitude. Cruz, a Latina, and Bax, a Muslim-American, are more recent creations. Lanterns Hal Jordan, perhaps the best  known character in the franchise, John Stewart and Kyle Raynor are not part of the show.

Many details are being kept on the planet Oa but the show is rumoured to possibly being the most expensive show coming from Berlanti, one of the most prolific producers working in TV today.

The show is in the breaking down the story stage and could be, factoring directors and casting, in production by mid-next year.

HBO Max’s Green Lantern series will most likely start production in the summer of 2021. Joining Guy Gardner, Bree Jarta, and Alan Scott are Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.

The Illuminerdi has official descriptions for Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. You can find them below:

  • Jessica Cruz: Protecting the galaxy is hard enough. It’s even tougher when you’re the type of person who’s uncomfortable leaving the apartment. Life forced Jessica to become self-reliant at a young age. She worked her way through school, while taking care of her younger sister. She’s bright. Determined. Looking at her you’d never know the struggle going on inside. Jessica lives with a sometimes- crippling anxiety disorder. She’s been fighting fear longer than any of our other Lanterns.
  • Simon Baz: For as long as he can remember, Simon’s loved the Green Lanterns. Using his innate charm and gift of gab, he works in Detroit as a vendor. However, business hasn’t been good lately. In the wake of 9/11, America has grown distrustful of young Middle Eastern men.

The Green Lantern Corps may have been just a glimpse on-screen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, but the group is getting their own time to shine in an HBO Max show.

You can’t have a Green Lantern Corps show without featuring Thaal Sinestro. According to Knight Edge Media, there’s a casting call for this role that leads into some information we can expect from the show. According to the outlet, the listing is looking for a male actor in his early to late forties. The ethnicity is open and according to the listing, the character is described as the “greatest Lantern in existence” and a “warrior monk”.

[THAAL SINESTRO]

  • Male, 40s, any ethnicity
  • The greatest of all the Green Lanterns, Sinestro is akin to a warrior monk, the personification of grace under pressure.
  • He serves as the strategic commander for the Corps and all Lanterns follow his orders without question.
  • Although he is revered for his unmatched will power and wisdom, a darker destiny belies his otherwise Zen demeanor.
