HBO Max's GREEN LANTERN show (2021?)

We at The Illuminerdi have exclusively learned an intriguing new piece of information about the upcoming Green Lantern series. According to our sources the Green Lantern series on HBO Max may be a bit darker than first imagined. It will apparently be akin to the Watchmen event series in tone. The Watchmen series is critically acclaimed for how it incorporated and addressed racism which was ingrained into the DNA of the series and the stories it was telling.

This darker tone is sure to have a major impact on not only the series as a whole, but the portrayal of each character and their own stories. Many of the Green Lanterns in the series are dealing with very real and sometimes very dangerous or difficult aspects of their lives especially in the era they live.

Green Lantern, DC’s iconic superhero who draws his power from a magical ring, is coming to HBO Max in a new live-action series. Writers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Seth Grahame-Smith will tell the story of several generations of men who take on the mantle, beginning with Alan Scott in 1941, reimagined here as a closeted FBI agent. Vickie Thomas Casting has already brought on Jeremy Irvine (“War Horse”) as Alan; Finn Wittrock (“American Horror Story”) will play Guy Gardner, a 1980s version of the hero. Production on the series is set to start later this year in Los Angeles.

Great to see this is actually still moving ahead. I was worried that the spin-off/merger would mean this is cancelled due to the slow pace of development.

GL is my second favourite DC character after Batman thanks to reading Emerald Dawn as a kid.

While Green Lantern hasn't moved forward as much as expected, the HBO Max product is still on its way. In a new Metro interview, Irvine was asked about the Green Lantern project and whether or not he has tried on his costume yet. Since getting cast in the role, Irvine hasn't done any costume fitting yet. However, the 31-year old actor did specify that when he was offered the gig, the Green Lantern creative team informed him how long it would take to make the Alan Scott costume, sharing the following:

"I haven’t yet. As far as I know, there’s not a firm start date yet. But when they offered me the role, they did say it was going to be about two or three months to make the outfit. Now they’re gonna have to fit my paunch into it."

While it has undoubtedly been a long process for the Green Lantern TV show, there are a lot of factors to take into account. For starters, HBO Max has stated that Green Lantern will be one of the most expensive DC TV shows of all time, and certainly for Berlanti, who has produced multiple Arrowverse shows. The studio is also looking at Green Lantern as one of their crucial DC properties, with the Green Lantern Corps movie seemingly still in development. Since HBO Max has already handed out a 10-episode order, perhaps they wanted to have all the scripts written before getting filming underway, which will be VFX-heavy. Hopefully, there will be more news about Green Lantern sooner rather than later.

Rather than focus on just one Emerald Knight, Green Lantern will be an ensemble series that revolves around multiple iconic members of the Green Lantern Corps. The cast of characters will include Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, Kilowog, and also an original character named Bree Jarta. Despite having Guy and Alan cast, with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine respectively, there has been speculation, including from filmmaker Kevin Smith, that Green Lantern has been canceled, due to the lack of news and progression on the project.

However, HBO Max's Green Lantern TV show is moving forward, and thanks to the Entertainment Identifier Registry (via @Sim0nJess,) the window release date has been revealed. The EIDR information reveals that the HBO Max drama is targeting a 2024 premiere. EIDR is what many media companies are using in order to keep up with their content that gets released on various platforms.

Green Lantern received a series order at the time. Strange Adventures, however, was only picked up for development, and after receiving scripts from Smith and Carrasco and several other writers, it didn’t move forward.

Green Lantern remains on track at the streamer, sources say, with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine set to star and Lee Toland Krieger (Superman & Lois, You) on board to direct the first two episodes. Sources say all involved are taking their time with the effects-heavy show — the priciest series Berlanti Productions has ever mounted — in order to get it right. (Berlanti co-wrote the screenplay for the 2011 Green Lantern feature film, which was panned by critics and considered a flop, grossing $219 million worldwide against a $200 million budget).

I am sorry, but did WBD hire a bunch of hack writers to do this? The comments from this assistant writer are not inspiring any faith considering how long it is taking to get it done.

Okay, but then this needs to tie into the DCEU. My hope is that this direction change is due to Gunn's new placement in leadership, and he intends on doing just that (tying Stewart into the movie universe).

The creative overhaul has reportedly nothing to do with the recent news that James Gunn and Peter Safran will co-lead DC Studios as the duo does not start their new jobs until Nov. 1.

So expect another overhaul then another and repeat until the end o'time

The decision to refocus Green Lantern arrives at a pivotal time for DC. Sources say the character of John Stewart was off the table to producers who envisioned the show as focusing on the first Green Lantern, the openly gay Alan Scott, and Guy Gardner as well as a “multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.” With DC Comics topper Walter Hamada’s recent exit, a decision was made to start over and build the show around John Stewart, the character who first appeared in the early 1970s and was modeled after Sidney Poitier. It’s worth noting that the Green Lantern creative overhaul has nothing to do with news this week that James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tapped to lead film, TV and animation at DC Studios in a role similar to what Kevin Feige is doing at Marvel. (Gunn and Safran don’t start their new jobs until Nov. 1).

Of the previous incarnation, only Berlanti and his Warner Bros. TV-based Berlanti Productions remain attached to Green Lantern. (Fellow exec producer Marc Guggenheim, who originally was poised to co-write the pilot alongside Grahame-Smith, was not recently involved with the show ahead of its retooling.)

Hamada wouldn't allow Zack Snyder to include John Stewart in his Justice League (2021). He wouldn't allow the Green Lantern show to include John Stewart.

What was Hamada thinking he was going to do with this character?
