WB's JOKER: THE SEQUEL directed by Todd Phillips (TBD)

The director is likely to reteam with star Joaquin Phoenix on a follow-up to the $1 billion-grossing R-rated hit, sources say.

On Oct. 7, Joker director Todd Phillips headed into Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich's office, buoyed by the film's $96.2 million opening-weekend haul. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter he proposed an outsized idea — the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters' origin stories.

Emmerich balked. After all, Warner Bros. is very protective of the DC canon. And all other DC deals have been for one film, and one film only. But Phillips did emerge from the meeting with the rights to at least one other DC story, sources say. And now that Joker has crossed the $1 billion mark, a sequel is on the way. As the movie keeps raking in money overseas, Phillips is in talks to reprise his role as director for a second Joker outing (he and Scott Silver, who penned the gritty Joker screenplay, will write the follow-up), THR has learned.

Warners has sequel options in place for Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, who has emerged as a strong contender in the Oscar best actor race. The studio and Phillips' reps at CAA declined to comment.

Joker marks the fourth DC title to cross $1 billion, following in the footsteps of 2018's Aquaman ($1.15 billion), 2012's The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and 2008's The Dark Knight ($1 billion). But its $60 million budget is far less than those previous films, so it is almost assured of generating profits of more than $500 million (Warners has a 50 percent stake, while Village Roadshow and Bron Studios each have 25 percent).

The unexpected bounty also is generating a huge payday for Phillips, 48. Sources say the director will earn close to $100 million when the dust has settled (he deferred his upfront salary in exchange for a bigger slice of the adjusted gross). In fact, the deal is similar to one he struck with Warners before the first Hangover movie, which went on to earn a surprise $467.5 million worldwide in 2009 off a $35 million budget (the trilogy took in $1.42 billion).

With Joker, Phillips already toyed with the idea of Bruce Wayne's origins (a letter written by the mother of Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, implies that the two are half-brothers. But Penny Fleck might not have been telling the truth, given the Fleck family propensity to imagine things that haven't taken place).

The Hollywood Reporter is considered to be much more reliable in the showbiz world than Deadline. And they should talk about clickbait.

(:

Agree. Like Deadline hasn't fired people up with crazy articles.

The rumor is this was Todd Phillips proving to WB how excited people would become if this moved forward. But no credible sources on that.

I listened to an interview with Todd Phillips on Michael Moore's new podcast. To me he (Phillips) comes across as a self-important tool.  He describes coming up with the idea to put a comic book character in a serious movie, as if nobody had ever had the idea before.  No mention of "Watchmen" or any of the many giants that came before.

The Mirror is a tabloid. So you do have to be cautious with taking this fully to heart just yet.

Joaquin Phoenix offered whopping $50million deal for two Joker sequels

After winning multiple awards, including an Oscar, for his portrayal of the comic-book villain the Hollywood actor is in talks to return for a double helping

Joaquin Phoenix could land a whopping $50million pay cheque to reprise his role in TWO Joker sequels. The actor, who won a raft of awards for his portrayal of the comic-book villain, is in talks to return for a double helping.

An insider tells me: “Joaquin initially felt Joker was a standalone movie. But he’s changed his tune now. He says he wants to play this character again, despite the controversies that came with the release last year. It’s still being negotiated but the scripts are being written and Joaquin is very engaged with it.”

My source says makers Warner Bros were “as shocked as anyone” by the film’s success last year.

They add: “They plan to make two sequels in the next four years, with a long-term commitment to Joaquin and his Joker director Todd Phillips and producer Bradley Cooper. It’s all about getting Joaquin to accept the terms – and the biggest payday of his career by far.”

My source reveals Joaquin waited until the last minute to sign his deal for the first Joker, but for the sequels they’re asking him to engage long-term. They hope to have the films ready for 2022 and 2024.

WB is tossing anything right now to distract from the current reputation risk concerns.

It looks like Warner Brothers is still interested in a sequel to the hugely successful Joker movie which starred Joaquin Phoenix under the direction of Todd Phillips. The film released in 2019 without the same mega-budget which most comic book properties tend to chew up but managed to bow as a mega-box office success. Following the film's release, Phillips and Phoenix downplayed the possibilities of doing another film which would follow up the events of Joker but reports have since claimed that a sequel to the film was towards the top of a wishlist at Warner Brothers. Now, a new report has revealed the sequel is still in development, along with many other DC Comics projects at the studio.

The future of the DC movie franchise seems to be firming up, as the studio is looking to use The Flash as a vehicle to link the cinematic multiverse together with opportunities for new stories to be told parallel to one another which will maintain the ability of character interactions despite being set in different cinematic worlds. "So far, every movie and TV show, with the exception of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson and set for release in March, HBO Max’s spinoff Gotham PD, and Joker and its planned sequel, will take place in the same universe," THR reported on Wednesday.

This main cinematic world comes on the heels of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League (though, his fully realized vision in the form of Zack Snyder's Justice League does not seem to be credited as canon, with the theatrical version completed by a separate director apparently being a part of the story going forward). Upcoming films set in this canon include The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and Shazam!: Fury of the Gods. Further out, sequels to Aquaman and Wonder Woman are also expected.

Joker and its expected sequel will be set in their own cinematic universes and it is unclear whether or not Warner Brothers has plans to connect Phoenix's version of the titular DC Comics villain to other films or HBO Max shows through the multiverse going forward. The sequel does not yet have a timetable for its release.

No doubt. Not to mention that movies with low production costs & high returns are what studios really need, considering the market.

A new report says that Todd Phillips, who directed and co-wrote the original Joker movie, has been brought on officially to co-write Joker 2. The first film, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the titular DC supervillain, earned widespread critical acclaim and won several major awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Phoenix. The sequel has been highly anticipated by fans since the original’s release.

Co-written by Scott Silver and director Todd Phillips, Joker put a classic Hollywood spin on the villain’s origin story, with clear homages to films like Taxi Driver in particular. The movie took place outside the core DCEU canon, which allowed for drastic differences in tone and style, as well as an R rating. Phoenix’s performance as the Joker has generally been viewed as one of the character’s best portrayals.
