Since the Lionsgate production bombed in 2017, they are relaunching the series with a different studio.

It’s Morphin time for Jonathan Entwistle

The filmmaker, perhaps best known for creating Netflix series The End of the F***ing World, is taking on Power Rangers, a new take on the colorful family adventure franchise, this time set up at Paramount Pictures.

Entwistle is in early negotiations to direct a new feature project that would reboot the title.

Rangers was a ’90s TV series and global marketing franchise, initially called The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, that used footage from a Japanese children’s show. The premise involved a group of kids who become superheroes, each with his or her own color-coordinated outfit and matching helmet. The show first aired on Fox Kids, then in the 2000s on Disney-owned channels. A movie also hit theaters in 1995.

Lionsgate produced and released a feature in 2017 that rebooted the title, making it less kid-friendly and giving it a more brooding YA edge. The movie bombed, grossing only $142 million worldwide on a budget of around $100 million, and plans for a series of films scrapped.

Now in Paramount’s court, Rangers is getting rebooted once more, in a way that hopes to bring the franchise to its roots. The story is said to involve a time travel element that brings the kids to the 1990s, and in Back to the Future fashion, they have to find a way to get back to their present. Patrick Burleigh, who wrote the upcoming Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, is penning the --script.

Power Rangers Getting Movie Reboot and Live-Action TV Show Connected Universe

Quote

Hasbro has been developing a Power Rangers feature film reboot, but that's not the only change in store for the famous franchise. Jonathan Entwistle has been tapped to direct the upcoming movie reboot, which will hopefully launch a new franchise during the Hasbro era, but a new report by THR reveals that the End of the F****** World and I'm Not Okay With This creator will also oversee and direct both film and television adaptations for the series moving forward, which is a huge shift for the franchise. Entwistle will be a conductor of a connected story universe that will expand across multiple platforms, meaning there will now be ties between TV and film.

In recent months eOne has taken over the development of the Power Rangers film from Paramount, and it seems with that has come a much more expanded role for Entwistle.

“Jonathan has an incredible creative vision for this iconic and hugely successful franchise, and is hands down the right architect to join us as we reimagine the television and film worlds of this property,” said eOne’s film president Nick Meyer and global television president Michael Lombardo in a joint statement. “Across our slate, we are looking forward to working with the most talented storytellers as we take on Hasbro’s rich fan-favourite brands and build entertainment universes around them."

“This is an unbelievable opportunity to deliver new Power Rangers to both new and existing generations of awaiting and adoring fans. We’ll bring the spirit of analog into the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success,” said Entwistle.

Recent iterations of the show have taken on some elements from the comics, but never directly connected. As for the recent reboot, it was well liked by fans but failed to deliver the franchise starter Lionsgate and Hasbro had hoped for at the box office, and so a sequel never happened.

Power Rangers fans have been getting a lot of news recently on the Hasbro and eOne Power Rangers movie reboot that's coming, and now the project has a writer. Bryan Edward Hill, who has written for DC, Marvel, BOOM! Studios, and more, has closed a deal to write the adaptation that will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, which will be developed and produced by eOne (via Deadline). Hill has written projects like Batman and the Outsiders, Detective Comics, Spider-Man, Strikeforce, Romulus, and more, though some of his best work was on BOOM! Studios' relaunch of Angel, reintroducing the vampire with a soul to the comics world in style. Now he'll be taking on the teens with an attitude, and we're eager to see what he can come up with.

We know from previous reports that the project will feature the original Mighty Morphin team and will embrace the 90s with some time travel elements, though we don't know much more. A recent announcement from eOne though stated that not only will Entwistle be shepherding the movie franchise, he will also develop the tv franchise, and all of it will be connected.

That's a big change from previous years, and the whole connected universe thing is something fans have wanted for a long time outside of the sporadic crossover or team-up episode.

Hill is also co-producer of Greg Berlanti's Titans series, which will launch season 3 on HBO Max.

Details have been few and far between for the anticipated Power Rangers movie and television universe reboot, but some new details might have just been revealed courtesy of The Illuminerdi and Jinsakuu. Illuminerdi has stated they've independently confirmed Jinsakuu's report about the reboot, and if these details are true, there are quite a few things to take note of. The details state that the same team that is being used in the movie will also be used in the upcoming show reboot and that the tone is in keeping with the 2017 movie reboot, though one of the bigger reveals is that the new Rangers are reportedly not Mighty Morphin.

It's a new team with new names but Jinsakuu says not to be surprised if Zordon and Alpha 5 are included as the mentors. There will also evidently be fewer Zord battles and they will only be used in big moments, and regarding the show, it will be more serialized and less focused on specific lessons or monster of the day.
