Paramount and Hasbro are pursuing concurrent development as they seek to expand the war between Autobots and Decepticons.

Paramount and Hasbro are rebuilding Transformers, hiring not one but two writers to pen scripts for the multi-billion dollar franchise.

Joby Harold, who co-wrote the upcoming Zack Snyder zombie movie, Army of the Dead, and James Vanderbilt, perhaps best known for writing David Fincher’s Zodiac, have been tapped to pen separate scripts as the companies pursue concurrent development.

The move happens over a year since the December 2018 release of the last Transformers movie, Bumblebee. That outing, a 1980s-set spin-off focusing on one of most popular characters, was the most critically acclaimed Transformers movie though it generated the least of the entries, $468 million worldwide.

The Transformers series, launched in 2007 with stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox and directed by Michael Bay, hit box office highs with 2011’s Dark of the Moon and 2014’s Age of Extinction, both of which made over $1.1 billion.

Takes on the direction of the projects were not revealed, but Paramount and Hasbro see the hires as giving the franchise a chance to build out multiple storylines and to also expand the Transformers universe. The toy brand's underlying storyline is the seemingly never-ending battle between the good robots-who-can-turn-into-cars, Autobots, and the wicked robots-who-can-turn-into-military-hardware, Decepticons.

Harold wrote Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and worked on John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Para Bellum. He is repped by Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and Goodman Schenkman.

Vanderbilt’s most recent credit was Netflix’s Adam Sandler hit, Murder Mystery. He also co-wrote the Andrew Garfield-starring Amazing Spider-Man movies and wrote and directed the newsroom drama Truth that starred Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford. Vanderbilt is repped by UFUSE Management and McKuin Frankel.

In our previous story, we reported that Paramount was looking to cast either an African-American or a Latino actor in his early to mid-twenties for lead role, along with a female co-lead as old or even slightly older, who can pass for a native New Yorker.

Reports now seem to indicate that Paramount’s search for this female co-lead has zeroed them in on a “Tessa Thompson-like” actress for the role. Other examples listed are Ruth Negga, Jurnee Smollett, and Zoe Kravitz.

It is unclear if Paramount has spoken directly to any of these actresses about the role in question, but it should give fans an idea of what direction and type of performer they are looking for.

New Transformers Movie Title Revealed

Quote

Today Paramount gave us our first details about the next Transformers movie, and Beast Wars fans are going to flip their lid. The title has been revealed to be Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and during the presentation, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Caple Jr. gave us even more to get excited about. We learned that your favorite Beast Wars characters and factions will be in play in the project, and the focus was on doing new things with the franchise and bringing elements that fans haven't seen yet to the big screen. It makes sense then that the franchise is now leaning so heavily into Beast Wars.

"We wanted to give the audience a lot of new," Bonaventura said. We have exhausted I would say the battle between the Autobots and Decepticons. How do we find a new set of villains and priorities, saving the world is left to the Autobots and in this case the Maximals. Part of the new news, if you've seen the other movies, you're going to see villains you've never seen before and a lot of elements we've never done before."

We also learned that the film will take place in 1994, and they also revealed who the main hero of this film will be, and that will be none other than Optimus Prime. The design is very G1, with the big pops of color throughout the suit but with a modern flair.

"I care so much about this character and I saw Bumblebee. I wanted to get underneath the metal if you will and explore his experience on earth, and he's my main robot, are we going G1, yes, we are going G1 Optimus Prime," Caple Jr. said.

Plot / movie details have trickled out (through a few sources on the major TF boards I'm on but for now will just post the twitter stuff):

Spoilers on characters / concepts in the movie:

Note, we don't know which 'Scourge' this is exactly but by the sounds of it they are mashing up a few character into this - so don't go expecting RiD Scourge to make a crazy awesome appearance here.

Mirage being a Porsche 911 is a literal crime against Jazz. Arcee will be a Ducati bike.

So yeah, hopefully this means the Terrorcons are THE actual terror cons and we get primal Abominus tearing things up on screen.

Caple revealed that Optimus Prime will be the film’s protagonist and that the fan-favorite character will appear in his G1 form — that is, his look from the classic 1980s toy line. He once again will be voiced by Peter Cullen. The Transformers team declined to comment on further voice castings, but promised some interesting news to come.

Meanwhile, Scourge will be the villain. He’s quite formidable, fusing parts of slain Transformers onto his own body.

“He loves to collect Autobots and Maximals and use them as his trophy,” said Caple, referring to the good Transformers in the film.

Another potential breakout character will be Optimus Primal, the gorilla leader of the Maximals and a confidant of Optimus Prime.

“It makes [Optimus] Prime have a character he can have a philosophical conversation on the same plane,” said di Bonaventura. “There’s a lot of commonalities they are dealing with, but there is a different perspective they are dealing with.”

This was rumoured for sooo long, and everyone just disregarded it as bunk. Here we are, it's real. Strange that we seem to be foregoing a follow-up to Bumblebee, and taking a bit of a risky turn with Beast Wars. Fingers crossed for Rhinox!

Ron Perlman has been tapped to voice Optimus Primal in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Collider has exclusively learned.

Optimus Primal is the fearless leader of the Maximals, and though Perlman did not voice Primal in the original Beast Wars: Transformers series -- that was Garry Chalk -- he did voice the character in the animated series Transformers: Power of the Primes. And for those wondering, yes, Peter Cullen will return to voice Optimus Prime in the character's G1 robot form, and the movie's plot will reveal why the Cybertronian has a connection to Earth and humanity.

The next live-action Transformers movie will center on the Beast Wars, and the globetrotting story -- which is set in the '90s -- will introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on Earth between Autobots and Decepticons. Rise of the Beasts will be led by rising stars Anthony Ramos (In the Heights) and Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah), and Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) is directing from a -script by Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters, who worked off an earlier draft by Joby Harold.

Prepare to have your nostalgia sensors flipped into overdrive because some Transformers 7 images have given us our first look at the designs for the Gen-1 Autobots and Decepticons of the film. This detailed look at the heroes and villains of the upcoming film is being brought us by the film’s director, Steven Caple Jr., who posted the image to his official Instagram account. In the photo, we find the director standing amidst several snazzy vehicles, all of which are bound to be robots in disguise.

The first of two Transformers 7 images shows Caple Jr. at the center of several Autobots. Each vehicle is sporting a fresh coat of paint that gives each a bit of retro flavor. There’s even a Volkswagon Bus parked among the group. Can I get the keys to that one, please? If you scroll over to the next photo, you’ll find three grimy-looking Decepticons. One of the beefier vehicles looks like it could have driven off the set of Mad Max: Fury Road, while the others look as if they’re ready to tear up the desert road.

Transformer: Rise of the Beasts has been pushed back to June 9th, 2023. This news comes from Paramount who has been shifting their cinematic slate a bit as of late. Their big Star Trek film has also been moved to late 2023 as well. But, the big news for Transformers fans is that they will have to wait a bit longer for their Beast Wars revival on the big screen. Bumblebee was a massive hit for the franchise and they're looking to build on that momentum. Stephen Caple Jr. is at the helm with Dominique Fishback and Anthony Ramos starring in the trip back to the 1990s. The Maximals, Predacons, and the Terrorcons have arrived on our planet with a fight on their mind. Optimus Prime and his trusty crew of Autobots will have to don the guises of animals in this take on the series mythology. Caple talked about the task ahead during a press conference.

"We wanted to expand the universe," the filmmaker began. "You have the Autobots and the Decepticons, and I would say my new flair to this is the Terracons. The Terracons are a new threat to Optimus Prime, and it's something I pride myself on when entering the franchise. I've done Rocky with Creed, and you bring the nostalgia that fans want, but also bring something they aren't expecting, and the Terracons are that."
