While The Illuminerdi already hinted at the most explosive news about the upcoming Cassian Andor series for Disney+, we can now openly confirm that George Lucas is returning to the Star Wars universe as a writer and Executive Producer. But what does this mean for the future of the franchise?

The upcoming Cassian Andor series will explore the origins of Cassian (Diego Luna) before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It will track his earlier adventures through the galaxy as a spy for the growing Rebel Alliance. The Illuminerdi has already reported that Diego Luna is set to return to the title role and will be joined by two other series regulars: the sardonic droid K2SO (as played by Alan Tudyk) as well as the mysterious Luna, who has not yet been cast.

But the bigger news about the series might be about who’s working behind the camera on this series. Our sources have confirmed that none other than George Lucas is set to join the project, as both writer and Executive Producer. This is a major development for Lucas, who hasn’t been directly involved in the Star Wars universe for years. This will also be his first time as a writer for the franchise since the release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Also working on the series will be Tony Gilroy, who wrote the screenplay for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and helped introduce Cassian and K2SO to the franchise in the first place. He was crucial to the rewrite process alongside director Gareth Edwards. This part of the news was first reported on by GeekTyrant, who also noted Lucas’ writing credit.

Wait, multiple sources have now said "The Illuminerdi" pulled that report out of their butts and Lucas isn't involved.  Which is exactly what I'd expect; the idea that he'd return to writing someone else's property is entirely inconsistent with his past behavior and attitude.

A number of factors have impeded the progress on Star Wars TV series, with the coronavirus pandemic being the major cause for problems behind the scenes on the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series and Obi-Wan Kenobi series, with a new rumor from Bespin Bulletin shedding light on how the two series could debut in 2022. Prior to the pandemic, reports emerged that the Obi-Wan series was undergoing some creative changes regardless of the pandemic, while the series focusing on Cassian Andor and K-2SO was rumored to have already started filming earlier this year when the pandemic thwarted those plans.

"They were touring Summer/Fall 2021 up until the COVID delay for Cassian," Bespin Bulletin shared on Twitter. "I believe Cassian is filming until July 2021. Kenobi should wrap around the same time, maybe a month later. So yeah, Spring, Summer and Fall seems right for SW D+ stuff in 2022. Exciting times."

Just this week, it was confirmed that Tony Gilroy, who was slated to direct the Rogue One prequel, was being replaced by Black Mirror director Toby Haynes. Understandably, this caused some concerns for fans that there might be troubles with the production, though it was confirmed that the reason was due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic, as Gilroy lives in New York while Haynes is based in the UK where the series is shooting. The production won't entirely be upended, as Gilroy endorsed the filmmaker and with Haynes having previously been tapped to direct later entries into the series, with Gilroy still serving as the series' showrunner and as an executive producer.

The Star Wars empire of shows at Disney+ continues to expand, with news that upcoming series Andor is moving forward with two more episode directors. The new hires for the massive production join Toby Haynes (Black Mirror: USS Callister) in a growing group headed by series showrunner Tony Gilroy, who originally developed the title character as co-writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Now Discussing Film confirms that filmmakers Susanna White and Ben Caron have been added to the roster of Andor directors for the Rogue One prequel series. White previously directed episodes of Boardwalk Empire, Billions, and Masters of Sex, among many others, as well as the feature film Nanny McPhee Returns. Interestingly, she also directed two Disney+ Star Wars stars - Andor's Stellan Skarsgard and Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor - in the movie Our Kind of Traitor. Meanwhile, Caron comes to Andor having helmed 11 episodes of the Netflix hit The Crown, on which he also serves as an executive producer.

Diego Luna will reprise his Rogue One character of Rebel spy Cassian Andor to head up the series, joined by Genevieve O’Reilly returning as Rebellion leader Mon Mothma, a role she also played in Revenge of the Sith and voiced for Star Wars Rebels. The character was originated by Caroline Blakiston in 1983's Return of the Jedi.

Additional Andor cast members include Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Adria Arjona, while the series also boasts scripts by writers Beau Willimon (House of Cards), Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), and Stephen Schiff (The Americans). Andor is currently slated to arrive next year, between The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan. No word yet on when exactly to expect Star Wars series Ahsoka, Lando, The Acolyte, or Rangers of the New Republic.

The Illuminerdi can exclusively report that Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi will have a reoccurring role in Andor.

What could Obi-Wan Kenobi’s role in Andor be?

The fact that Obi-Wan will have a sizeable role in Andor shows that Lucasfilm is making an effort to connect all of its Disney+ series. Obi-Wan had a close relationship with Senator Bail Organa, so maybe he will be a key contributor of intel for the growing rebellion. Will the Andor storyline correlate at all with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series? Time will tell.

Production on Andor is slated to end this July and the series will hit Disney+ next year. Tony Gilroy, who famously oversaw re-writes and re-shoots on Rogue One, was originally at the helm. Now Toby Haynes will be directing, along with Ben Caron and Susanna White. Alongside Diego Luna and McGregor, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Rielly as Mon Mothma, will star.

Since Cassian Andor serves as a Rebel Alliance intelligence officer, the guerrilla organization introduced in 1977's Star Wars are clearly going to play a big part in the upcoming series. And with Mon Mothma back to dish out orders and remind everyone roughly how many Bothans died during each mission, Andor will chronicle Cassian's career sourcing secrets and infiltrating enemy strongholds in the name of the Rebel Alliance.

The morality of the Star Wars universe is traditionally rather black and white. There is literally a light side and a dark side. The galaxy far, far away has occasionally dabbled in ethical gray areas, but results have been mixed. Fortunately, Andor offers the perfect opportunity to take a deep breath and delve headfirst into the grimier aspects of the Rebel Alliance, proving it's not all high-fives in the hanger and teaming up with forest bears.

The only announced Star Wars offering that naturally lends itself to a more refreshing take on the Rebellion is Andor. In their big screen escapades, the audience only witnessed the outward face of the Rebellion - the hopeful beacon in a dark galaxy. These are the missions that make the headlines, and later become legendary tales told everywhere from Tatooine to Trask. But it stands to reason that behind the joyous celebrations and self-righteousness lies a web of deception, espionage, violence, and all the things that stay hidden from the citizens of the Star Wars universe. As an intelligence officer, Cassian Andor can be the fulcrum in exposing the Rebel Alliance's murky secrets.

Oh man. Can’t wait. I really hope they shine more light on Saw Guerra or his followers during the show. It was definite fan service they included him in Rogue One.

Of course, anyone who followed Rebels and, to a lesser extent, Clone Wars/ Bad Batch know his role in the rebellion and his philosophy. However, for the uninitiated, it would make for compelling television.

That looks really good.

Also, I'm not sure if the thing in the water at the 1:16 mark is supposed to be a similar style ship to the Colossus from Star Wars Resistance, but if so, cool call back...er forward.

I was rewatching Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last night in 4K. What a good movie! To include the story having high stakes to the point there are all those deaths of leads that normally would never take place.

Now, this supposedly being a prequel show to the prequel movie - how do you get attached to the excitement of the characters knowing later on Cassian Andor?
