As the YouTubers and all would say, this is a Key issue for Sgt Preston as it contains Preston's origin story: How did he become a Mountie and a Sergeant -

Behind the cover, it's still Giolitti in charge of all Preston content and no shirking again.

Here's Preston as a young man in college and receiving the news his father was murdered, the reason he joined the RMCP -

Here, Preston for the first time comes upon his father's murderer. Notice how the two shots are the same from opposite directions. The image is wonderfully layered and Giolitti does a fantastic job of keeping everything in place when he goes to the reverse angle. Subtle but appreciated -

Great landscape establishing shot, fore-, middle- and background effortlessly distinct. I am in love with how the tree with the snow on the left side is drawn -

Same level of effort on this splash page -

That’s some great artwork. Not a book I would normally consider picking up but it looks well done.

Mouse Musketeers # 20

Yes, it's getting quite late to call this GA but this fits here better than anywhere else.

I love the fact that there exists a series of main characters in an alternate reality this early in comics history. Today, we hear of Medieval Spawn or let's say Wizards of Mickey commonly and are not surprised. Granted, there is Four Color 157: Mickey and the Beanstalk based on Fun and Fancy Free but that remained a one-shot and did not dovetail in a 24-issue comic run like T&J in the Mouse Musketeers series (7 issues in FCs, 14 issues in stand-alone series and back in for 3 more issues in FC).

The success of the original The Two Mouseketeers cartoon in 1952 led to the first issue FC 475 in 1953, before the release of the second (of four) cartoon in 1954.

All that said, the range of stories feels somewhat limited, almost invariably involving the King and using his favoritism of the mice as the drive of Tom's resentment. Since the stories are short, setting up Tom's injustice eats up at least one page if not more and then cuts short what we are waiting for: the gags. I don't want to fault this particular series too much since this is a failing of most long-run Dell series of cartoon characters, getting bogged down in the established trope. Still, reading an occasional issue reminds us why it became a series. We all love chivalry, castles, horseplay, duels, panache, and tomfoolery.

I like this splash. The dummy makes me smile -

and I enjoyed this gag. It was nice to see Tyke struggle against the woodpecker and Spike being the voice of reason in this one -

Speaking of which, I recently learned that “Dell comics are good comics” is apparently attributed to Dell President Helen Meyer.

So I was flipping through several of my 1947-51 Dell comics this morning and it's true. In fact Dell were not only "good" comics, they were "great" comics! Each had a very nicely drawn front cover, 48 pages(!) of stories including the two inside covers though these two were in B&W, a two page text story so that the comic could be classified as printed matter for postage purposes and a back cover with a delightful subscription ad. But other than that there wasn't a single ad! So each Dell comic featured 52 pages of solid content.
