I've a nice raw set 2up but my #1 is not so hot.. VG+/FN probably.  Has a big corner ding.

I used to own a Savage Tales 1 CGC 9.0 with white pages years ago but regretfully sold it later on. Just got this raw copy now for my collection as I'm a Man-Thing fan and the price on this book has really jumped!

Does seem like something just .... happened  

This might be my favorite mag. I do remember getting my first ST #1 9.6 mag - from a dude in Canada. It was a true treasure - back then I was kinda ecstatic getting that book. Of course it was not similar to holding my firstborn son for the first time, or was it?    

At 9.6 these mags are selling for 5k now - and 2k for 9.0. They grow up so fast...

Can this be a 9.8 with that top staple wearing almost through the cover? Considered a production flaw I guess?

I would not consider it a flaw, pretty sure CGC doesn't either - it's just how these mags were made.

Then we disagree. As when this mag originally came out of production, that staple though raised slightly, certainly did not produce the amount of wear and color loss that appears now. That can only happen from weight and friction. Maybe a result from a press? Still a beautiful book don’t get me wrong, just questioning the defect in the 9.8 realm.

There may be many things to consider buying a new mag like this - if you're able to find one - personally I like if the cover isn't too misaligned (thus horizontal lines across the cover should be horizontal, not going up or down), and the red ink should pop to some degree (indicating that the cover hasn't been exposed to too much light) and I like sharp corners with no visible defects - and I like a clean white back. 

Once I did monitor new ST #1 9.8 mags - but gave up some years ago. I still have these images - as you can see, 1055066001 was graded some time ago (April 4 2011) and still looks much the same:

Thanks, my favorite might be 0719351006 - and the one selling on HA a few months ago (3861224003). Then again, some may have flaws hard to see on low-res photos, and of course none were graded 9.9...
